In my opinion, I think that good mental health is just as important as good physical health. Millions of Americans suffer each day from different types of mental illness, and mental health problems. Some of them include, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), personality disorder, addiction to drugs and alcohol, and many more. Mental illness is very serious and, it cannot be overcome by, “willpower.” It’s not related to a person’s character or intelligence. Mental illnesses are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. In most cases, it affects a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, and ability to relate with anyone around them. More serious mental illnesses are schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression. Mental illnesses are treatable, and people can experience relief from mental illness in recovery. I think that the best therapy for mental illness would be pharmacological treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, peer support groups to help educate people who are suffering, and teach them the best coping skills, diet, and exercise. The more a person knows about the illness they suffer from, and how it effects there brain, the better chance of a successful recovery. I also think that treating drug and alcohol dependence with medications is a good thing as long as there is a treatment plan included with it. A lot of questions are involved in diagnosing someone with mental illness. I suffer from mental illness due to drug addiction, so writing about this hits home for me. The reason I think medication is good for treating mental illness for dependence is because it’s the treatment that I receive, and it seems to be really working for me. I’m very strong in my recovery, and it’s important that work at it every day to maintain good mental health.
