Society molds us into the people we are today. Depending on what part of society we come from usually determines what will be valued in a spouse. In Deborah Siegel’s article “The New Trophy Wife”, she writes about what men value in a woman. Siegel mentions the difference between what educated and rich men used to value in history and what they value today. She compares men in the past who valued beautiful women to men in the modern society who value bright and accomplished women. Rich men and working class men want different things in a spouse. Unlike rich men, working class men value educated and successful women who can contribute to their family.
Both rich men and working class men value a wife that will teach their children what they need to know in order to succeed in life. Naturally, when raising a child parents tend to teach them the way life works from their personally experiences. This effects how a man will choose a spouse because they will want someone who can teach their children good enough to their expectations. They need a woman who will contribute positive skills to their growing family. A woman who has a great personality, which is an important quality, will push a man into wanting the women as their wife because that is something that will attract them. Being a good communicator is something that they will like in a woman and want passed down to their children. Men want to see their wife contribute beneficial qualities to their children because they liked that quality in their spouse.
Some qualities that are mainly mentioned that rich men would be looking for would be a good looking woman who they will enjoy introducing to their friends and family. This is something that people believe and is mentioned in Siegel’s article. On the other hand, working class men rather focus on women having qualities such as a good education so they can have an educated and deep conversation.
