The Medium is The Message
In recent years, technology has made a huge impact to both communication and cultural world. Almost every people lives in either urban or rural environments use social media to communicate with each other and share their cultures. Music is one of the main roles in human culture. In this essay I would like to share about the connection between the world famous communication quote “The medium is the message” by Marshall McLuhan and my major, which is Audio Engineering. First of all, the medium is the message literally means that the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. Apparently, a lot of people often tend to focus on the obvious, which is the content of the medium rather than the medium itself. As McLuhan stated, the medium itself carries a message that tells more than the content. Moreover, he described medium in a broader sense and demonstrated it as a light bulb. A light bulb does not have content in the way newspaper has articles, but with its mere presence it creates an environment. The way people share their culture defines their own personality. There are people who find pleasure in sharing their culture about traditional dances, art, language, science or religious beliefs, and music as well as various ways enjoying it. Unfortunately most people, as been said before, are often tend to focus on the obvious, which is the content, such as artists and musicians, songs and music festivals, rather than the medium. Therefore, there is audio engineer on the surface. The audio engineer does not have content the way cd has songs or music festival has artists lined-up, yet it is a medium that has many effects.
