Marijuana has many useful purposes in this day and age, especially if monitored correctly. All though it is still an illegal substance, it can benefit our country in many ways. Marijuana can help people cope with illnesses, help insomnia, and lastly stimulate the economy. Sometimes in society our people and government need to take a step back and look at the big picture to see where they really need to be focusing their attention on. Law enforcement should not be spending all of their time trying to track down and catch both medicated users, and users that are in need of this plant. These are only a few reasons that marijuana should be legal in the United States
First of all, should the sick, disabled, and dying be given harsh penalties for using this “drug” that clearly helps them? According to Bonnie Pranger, THC treats nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. If people terminally ill with cancer literally feel better why not let them live peacefully and without pain for the remainder of the short time that they do have left. According to Dr. West with terminal illnesses there is a tendency to have an extreme loss in appetite. Marijuana could regulate patient’s appetites. Its no secret, a side effect to marijuana is being hungry. This will keep patients from becoming weak and frail. Its like if you had a couple more years to live you would want to make it the most enjoyable years of your life. Therefore with marijuana these patients will be able to eat easier, sleep better, and not be in aching pain the whole day. Next, according to E-medicine Health 30-50% of the general population are affected with Insomnia, 10% of this is chronic insomnia. Insomnia is a symptom of difficulties sleeping or staying asleep. These patients have to take all different sleeping pills; these sleeping pills are digested orally and flow through your body damaging your liver, kidneys, and other vital organs.
