This song conveys a good image through the slow beat and melody, which puts the listener into a trance and in doing so, calms them down. The lyrics to this song are very versatile as they can be related to a number of issues faced by people in this day and age. This is demonstrated in the following stanza.
"Now all those feelingsthose yesterdays feelingswill all be lost in timeBut today I've wasted awayfor today is on my mind"This stanza is inspirational. Bert, the lead singer conveys the message that memories of a tragic past should not be allowed to depress people and that it is important to move forward. The line "For today is on my mind" is his way of saying live for the moment.
He is definitely separating past bad connections in order to move forward. This creates a good image"The Used" is part of the controversial punk, "emo" movement, unfortunately the fact that the band has an unconventional repertoire of songs, discourages people who dislike this genre of music from engaging with the lyrics. Due to the lyrics and themes of some of their other songs, the target audience age wise would be teenagers and people in their twenties.
Through this song, Bert and The Used convey the message that life presents unexpected obstacles, and sometimes individuals are overpowered by the feelings associated with these obstacles. This song teaches the quality of being able to let go of all the negative feelings bottled up inside and to look into the future with an optimistic view "Yeah today is on my mind".
Bert, the lead singer of The Used, was recovering from a traumatic sequence of events while writing this album. His girlfriend was pregnant with their child when she took an overdose of cocaine and killed herself and their unborn baby. Through this song, Bert is letting go of his pain, ending his painful journey in order to leave room for change in his future life. In the bible, Jesus preaches the message of God through his actions and by dying on the cross.
Bert uses his talent and status to get a message across to his listeners telling them not to give up and to put bad pasts behind them. Similarly Bert, through his song and Jesus by his life and preaching, both embarked on journeys. Their journeys involved problems and emotional or physical challenges. For Jesus, it involved spreading God's word to disbelievers and giving the ultimate gift, his own life, for the sake of humanity. For Bert, this involved, suffering the death of his wife and using his talent to communicate methods of overcoming negative emotions.
Although it may appear strange to compare Bert and Jesus, this example shows that there is Jesus in every individual, even the lead singer if a punk band.
