The New World of Media Convergence Compared to Old World Economics
It has become commonplace of people in modern society to attempt to become a master of multiple crafts. Children grow up learning the classical subjects in education, fine arts, musical talents and athletics. In this new world, it seems that it is of utmost importance that individuals exploit all of their talents and abilities. A humanist stress on individualism has led to a state where modern professions require multiple skills, skills that were not required of that same profession years earlier. The field of journalism is a prime example of a quickly changing profession. Within this changing profession exists solo-journalism: journalists who work alone, and therefore must become a master of everything related to their field (Morris). Though this multiple skill mastery may sometimes benefit the individual, it contradicts the theory of division of labor within the study of economics (Smith).
Journalism is the way of conveying news, descriptive materials and telling a story through media (Aucoin). Journalists are the people who tell the stories, either through printed words, printed visuals, or audio and visual recordings. Journalists are obviously very important to the news spreading process, but there are other professions that are equally as important to helping the news reach masses of people. Editors of prints such as newspapers or magazines help fact check, spell check and smooth over a written work so that it is publishable (Aucoin). Publishers help arrange the layout of the printed work, add relevant pictures next to the story, and publish the story (Aucoin). A photographer may be necessary to take pictures of a specific scene so the reader may experience something visually in the print.
