Meaning Of Life
We were given a homework assignment to compare and contrast the differences of two readings and argue which author’s work is superior. I will also take a position of part of the writing and try to convince the reader this view point can work and come to a single understanding. I will compare the short stories we were assigned to for our reading the first one is “A Hanging” By George Orwell. The Second story I will be using is “Hand Outs” by John Crawford I will argue that there is a similarity between the two writings and try to explain to you how they fit together and make since. I will also incorporate source material from the readings to make it all come together to a single understanding and convince my readers to think the same way.
Starting off I will tell you that I am comparing these two stories in part, to show that they share the same feeling for the caring of other living people even though all looks grim. I think that the reading of “A Hanging” by George Orwell makes the best argument to confirm my thinking in this story he talks about a prisoner that is on his way to the gallows chained and being walked by four guards two holding their weapons at a slope and the other two close to him holding his arm and shoulder in escort to his death sentence. The quote from the story that shows the most about the meaning of life is ”When I saw the prisoner step aside to avoid the puddle, I saw the mystery, the unspeakable wrongness, of cutting a life short when it is in full tide”(Orwell 464).
Then person telling the story speaks of the superintendent talking as if the prisoner was already dead and everything that was going on like chasing the dog all over the prison yard was wasting the time of the prison, which is needed to do other things that are more important. But the second quote from the story recognizes. “This man was not dying; he was alive just as we were alive.” (Orwell 464)   Then they lead him to the gallows to be hanged as they... [continues]
