Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

Mean, median, and mode are three kinds of "averages". There are many "averages" in statistics, but these are, I think, the three most common, and are certainly the three you are most likely to encounter in your pre-statistics courses, if the topic comes up at all.
The "mean" is the "average" you are used to, where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers. The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers. To find the median, your numbers have to be listed in numerical order, so you may have to rewrite your list first. The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.
The "range" is just the difference between the largest and smallest values.
Find the mean, median, mode, and range for the following list of values:
13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13
The mean is the usual average, so:
(13 + 18 + 13 + 14 + 13 + 16 + 14 + 21 + 13) ÷ 9 = 15
Note that the mean is not a value from the original list. This is a common result. You should not assume that your mean would be one of your original numbers.
The median is the middle value, so I will have to rewrite the list in order:
13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21
There are nine numbers in the list, so the middle one will be the (9 + 1) ÷ 2 = 10 ÷ 2 = fifth number:
13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21
Therefore, the median is 14.
The mode is the number that is repeated more often than any other, so 13 is the mode.
The largest value in the list is 21, and the smallest is 13, so the range is 21 – 13 = 8. mean: 15 median: 14 mode: 13 range: eight
Note: The formula for the place to find the median is "([the number of data points] + 1) ÷ 2", but you do not have to use this formula. You can just count in from both ends of the list until you meet in the middle, if you prefer. Either way will work.

The mean (or sum of data entries divided by number of entries) of 2270, is only very slightly larger than the median (the data at the middle of the sample), and the mode (the data entry that occurs with the greatest frequency) which are both the same at 2207. This represents a very slight affect by the outliers at the high and low ends of the data sample, indicating that the mean presents the most accurate description of the data set. (Larson & Farber, 2011. pgs. 66, 67, 68). [See Exhibit A].…

Explaining the make up a data description one must calculate the mean, median and standard deviation. To determine the mean, also known as the arithmetic average, is found by adding the value of the data and diving by the total numbers of values. In this case of a Bottle company study with thirty different bottles. The mean is 15.2, which was able to be reach by calculating the value of 30 bottles that equal 457 ounces divide by 30 (457/30=15.2). The median is the halfway point in a data set. Before you can find this point, the data must be arranged in order. When the data set is ordered, it is called a data array. The median either will be a specific value in value in the data set or will fall between two values. In this case the value falls in the middle to 15.6. The Standard Deviation is the square root of the variance. The preceding computational procedure reveals several…

Descriptive statistics refers to examining data to determine average, mode, median, kurtosis, skewness, and correlation. Statistical average is referred to as the mean. Researchers determine the mean by dividing the sum of observed values by the number of observations (n). Field (1998) states, statistical average (mean) boils down to the equation outcome = (model) + error (pg. 39). The mean is a good estimate for predictive statistical research.…

To calculate the median we need to put the bottles of water in order from least to greatest. Next we need to count from least to greatest ten bottles, and then count ten bottles from greatest to least. Since there are thirty bottles of water we will two middle numbers. The two middle numbers that the data provided to us are 15.98 and 16.00. We need to calculate the mean of these two numbers by adding 15.98+ 16.00 and then dividing by two. The median of the thirty bottles of water is 15.99. This too is showing us there is less than sixteen ounces of water in our bottles.…

There are many different ways to describe the data we collect and all are important when conducting business. The mean of a data set is the sum divided by the # of observations. Now saying exactly what a mean is can be helpful, applying it to the business world makes understanding it a lot easier. Mean can be used in a business environment by both tax offices and retailers when collecting income from a group of people; in this case both groups are interested in the total amount of money that happens to be available. Companies can determine the mean salary for their business to know the average amount they are paying employees (some employees may make more or less than the mean).…
