McDonaldlization is a theory applied to understanding services in the workplace and society. Ritzer defines McDonaldlization as “the process by which the principle of the fast food restaurants are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world” Efficiency, predictability, calculability and control are the driving forces behind our society. Every aspect of society today is affected by McDonaldlization.
Weber’s theory of McDonaldlization is that human action can be broken down into control, calculation and measurement. Ritzer’s theory is similar but expands buy efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control. Efficiency “choosing the optimum means to a given end”. Predictability “emphasizes such things as discipline, order, systemization, formalization, routine, consistency and methodical operation in such a society people prefer to know what expectation most setting and at most time”. Product is the same continues behavior is predictable. Employees wear the same uniforms and have an order of operation. Calculability is “an emphasis on the quantitative aspects of products sold and service offered”. The product sold will never change it will always be quantity over quality. Control is the replacement of humans with non-human technology such as pop dispenser to timed appliances all process is controlled by mechanics.
McDonaldlization as Ritzer said “The process by which the principles of the fast food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of America society as well as the rest of the world”.
Irrationality of Rationality is the fifth aspects of McDonaldlization. “Most specifically, irrationally means the rational systems are unreasonable systems. By that I mean that they deny the basic humanity, the human reason, of the people who work within or are served by them” Ritzer.
