Companies do not operate in isolation, and as such, what occurs in one industry can have a significant impact on the processes and actions in another industry. The increasing complexity of operating in a global economy creates opportunities for companies, such as Global Communications, to re-evaluate their processes, to initiate a best practices approach in decision making and methods of communication, to renew commitment to employees, to increase employee goodwill and to set realistic and measurable goals for success.
Global Communications is faced with the problematic situation of how to implement the changes needed to ensure the company’s survival. By examining 10 companies who have faced similar competitive and economic pressures, have implemented alternative solutions and who have remained industry leaders, potential solutions for Global Communications are presented.
Company Synopses
Circuit City
Circuit City, one of the major electronics retailers in North America, faces many of the same market dynamics and economic challenges as Global Communications. In response to these industry forces, Circuit City has initiated and carried out a plan very similar to the proposed Global Communications management strategy as “part of a series of changes to improve financial performance largely by realigning [the company’s] cost and expense structure” (Short-Circuited, 2007). The methods and results of Circuit City’s strategy are indicative of “what not to do” and illustrate the reasons Global Communications needs to take very seriously the potential impact of its strategy.
