Maui Diver: Finding Pearls in Plunging Necklines
Michael Estes Instructor: Jeffrey Mexia English 100 20 June 2012

Maui Diver: Finding Pearls in Plunging Necklines Why does looking at this female model make me want to buy pearls? The focus of this advertisement is that of a particularly attractive female model, sitting on what appears to be an outdoor couch. The entire composition of the image, has the female subject positioned in a close-up and frontal view; angled in such a way that the subject appears to be sitting right next to the advertisement's audience in comfortable surroundings on a beautiful day. The background composition of the image is of a well manicured grass lawn that leads into peaceful blue waters. The shades of blue in the water are highly similar to that of the color of the couch upon which the model is sitting.

The point of view of the audience, is that of being seated beside the female model; using a subjective effect that creates the illusion of greater intimacy. The model is visually appealing to both males and females due to the soft warm tones of her skin, as well as having wrinkle-free and blemish-less skin. I believe this ad targets both males and females (preferably couples). Just from the general layout of the ad I would suggest that the target audience is composed of outer-directed consumers: “Achievers”, couples between the ages of 25-54 years old (with the majority being 35 and older).

If the audience is female, then the angle of the subject and close-up focuses attention on the hearings, necklace, ring all made of black pearls; nevertheless, as the audience begins to look out from those pearls, the audience sees a young woman with beautiful hair, flawless makeup, and manicured fingernails. Even the eyes of the model which appear to be gazing off into the distance

makes it more comfortable for the audience to maintain a longer period admiring her and what she is wearing.

On the other hand assuming that the audience is composed entirely of males sexually attracted

Commercials are always targeting specific audiences with certain angles or visuals in the ad, for example, the Old Spice Company is a male deodorant and body wash producer but in this commercial the spokesperson is trying to convince women that they want their men to wear Old Spice. Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men. This approach was used in the Gucci Underwear advertisement that Bordo described in her first chapter. Other ways that an advertisement can showcase a man is by perceiving them as “heterosexual” (Bordo, 145) and a stereotypical burly man. When males are perceived as manly men in an advertisement it appeases to a more homophobic group of people. Bordo believes that it should be just as accepted in todays culture for men to be the center of sexual and risky ads just like it is for women.…

One element of this image that pops out almost immediately is the saying plastered in the middle of the page: “A Body for Every Body.” This is one of the many things wrong with this advertisement. When a reader reads the saying and then looks at the models who are wearing the bras, the advertisement starts to become very contradictory to its slogan. Looking at these…

In regards to the article, "Men's Men and Women's Women",Craig explains to the reader how advertisements and commercials use gender roles,in order to attract the gender audience they desire. Therefore, he demonstrates that there is four categories that identify these types of audiences. For instance, there is men's women this category targets men attracted by women, men's men's are influenced by mens their selves, women's women are women who influence one another, and women's men are men who attract women. In the advertisement there is just one model. He is placed in a very dominating position at the foreground of the ad. Because he is the sole model and he is also in a very dominating position, almost leaning into you, your attention is automatically directed towards him. When one looks at the model one gets a sense of modern adventure and navigating through the modern day world. He is obviously an adventurer, successful, rich and is a very independent man that only depends upon himself.…

The ad I chose is of CoverGirl which is one of the most successful cosmetic companies in the world. As most CoverGirl advertisements, this ad is also for the female audiences. The ad to me seems to target young and middle age woman of any race or some men who think that they can make their women look like the model as in the ad. CoverGirl attracts women by convincing them that the use of makeup product will increase the qualities in their personality and resemble that the celebrity possesses like simply by using Covergirl's lipstick or any other product. The advertisers determine exactly who they want their target audience to be and establish intelligent ways for their product to be the preferred one. Cover Girl is known for their…

In advertising it is easy to get a man's attention by using women's bodies and associates getting the woman if he buys the product. Advertising is a two hundred fifty billion dollar industry and affects us all in our normal daily lives. One person alone is exposed to over three hundred advertisements every single day whether that be through billboards, posters, pictures, or commercials. Advertising is a major aspect of our lives many will say we are not influenced by ads while wearing UGG boots and a North Face jacket. The topic of women in advertising has been an issue in society since the beginning of popular culture in media and when advertising methods started to first be practiced. Today’s media centralizes around the idea of sex and the use of “beautiful” women. These methods establish a social problem with women that began long ago and still continues today. In Jean Kilbourne’s Video, Killing Us Softly 4, she discusses how the media has portrayed women in advertisements for many years. As demonstrated in the two advertisements below, women today are viewed negatively by the public and themselves when they do not have the ideal model body. As Kilbourne stated in her video, “Women are taught from a young age that they need to look a certain way in order to be beautiful, they need to have the quality of being thin to be desirable.”…

When looking for the big picture, there are a number of things to consider such as the source of the image, the prominent element, and the focal point of the image. The source in this image is the man in the center of the five women because the product is for him, the male. The purpose of the image is to attract to you the ad so you will see what has happened to the man to convince you to buy the product so women will want you. The audience of this image would be teenage and men in their twenties. By looking at the want ad, the viewer can tell that the ad is directed toward men by the comment the want ad says, “Wanted: Testees”. Most men who read ESPN magazine are in their late teens and twenties. The prominent element that immediately may attract the viewers attention is the five women in the center of the picture. They are all standing in a sexual pose over the man…

When other women see this ad, it is going to make them question their appearance. They are going to sit there and wonder about how their significant other thinks about them. It puts them in depression mode and pick’s out all their flaws. They will ponder on how they are too fat or too skinny, and why they aren’t pretty enough to be on a front page of a magazine. Which that would lead to depression and self- esteem issues. By me deciding to do this ad, it made me realized how men categorize us women. It also made me realize how average man belittles us daily. In this Gucci advert we can see how the male model is standing over the female model in a physically dominant position as he stands upright over the female model it suggests that he is the more powerful figure in the image. The camera angle also shoots him from a lower angle making him appear ostentatious while the female model is portrayed as the weaker one of the two because of the fact that she is lower and in a submissive pose. The male model comes across as the sexual lead, and the female model seems to be anticipating his every move. This advertisement triggers another idea whereby females have been misled to believe that life is unsatisfactory without a male present, it also projects the impression that women are nothing but sexual objects merely placed on earth to serve men. what identifies her as a sexual object is her nakedness, even though her breasts are not shown, they are subliminally exposed to the man. All these different factors are used convince society on what it is to be a woman. Gucci sends a message to society that if one were to wear Gucci clothing men will want you, you are desirable and that the ultimate…
