Mastering a Skill: Becoming a Better Parent

I must admit that this assignment really made me think. I wrecked my brain trying to come up with a skill that most people didn’t have but could benefit from. The skill that I came up with isn’t really a skill that I would say was a must for people to learn, but is rather one that many people including kids could benefit from and that is “Becoming a Better Parent.” I know no one is perfect, but I feel that many people don’t really understand what qualities make up being a good parent. Many parents feel that just because they provide for the child financially then they’re a great parent, but in actuality it takes more then just financial obligations to make you a good parent. Rethink your life: one day each week, squeeze your schedule into your family life, rather than your family into your schedule. Find things that you can do together as a family. Make sure that you give each child individualized attention. Talk to your child; find out how he’s doing. Make yourself responsible for having a finger on his pulse. Be accessible, even when you’re busy.

For starters, many parents need to work on being a better listener to their child or children. Lack of communication is one of the main reasons why many kids tend to shut their parents out. Parents need to stop being so demanding and take the time out to see their kid’s point of view. Make your kids feel comfortable enough to come and talk to you about anything. I’m not saying that you have to be your child or children’s best friend, but there’s nothing wrong with being a friend as well as a parent.  

Also, try spending more quality time or family time with your kid or kids. Family time doesn’t mean you have to go out and spend money. You can have family time right in the privacy of your own home for free. Spending time doesn’t mean you have to do anything special. All it means is that you give your interest and attention.
