This paper explores the leadership styles and models used in Marriott International Inc. The research is done through three books, a news article and the company’s web page. The news article covers the CEO, HRM and COO exclusively. The books will all cover the theories and reasoning behind leadership skills. This paper examines the leadership styles used by the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operations Officer and the Human Resource Manager. These three individuals each use a different leadership theory from Contingency Leadership Theory to Integrative Leadership Theory to Management to the Leadership Theory. This paper will compare and contrast the theories used by the top three board members in an elite company and attempt to explain why the theories can be so different but still come together in the end to form one of the best companies to work for.

The intention of this paper is to look at elite companies such has Marriot International and analyze the leadership to see if there are certain qualities that make a better leader present. This paper will analyze those leadership models and theories such has Contingency Leadership Theory, Integrative Leadership Theory, Management to the Leadership Theory, define them and try to make comparisons between the successful leaders in Marriott International Inc. The purpose of this paper is to research the Marriot International and there programs to success.
Marriot International, INC. is a leading lodging company with more than 3,700 lodging properties in 73 countries and territories. Marriott International operates and franchises hotels under the Marriott, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton, Renaissance, Residence Inn, Courtyard, Towne Place Suites, Fairfield Inn, Spring Hill Suites and Bulgari brand names. Marriot provides furnished corporate housing through its Marriott Executive Stay division and operates conference centers. The company is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, USA, and had approximately 300,000 employees at 2011 year-end. It is recognized by Fortune as one of the best companies to work for, and by Newsweek as one of the greenest big companies in America. In 2011, Marriott International reported sales from continuing operations of nearly $12 billion. (International, 1996). These are some of the reasons that this company is one of the best to work for and examples of why the above mentioned leadership theories are working.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Marriot International Inc is Arne Sorenson. The research conducted into him was to take a look at his leadership style, theory and programs he has put in place to make a successful corporation. Arne Sorenson has been with Marriott International Inc for sixteen years after having been personally recruited by J.W. Marriott Jr in 1996. Mr. Sorenson has served Marriott International Inc in many roles and capacities from chief financial officer with oversight of European operations to the chief operations officer. CEO Arne Sorenson gets his back ground from the University of Minnesota Law School and a Bachelor Degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Mr. Sorenson served has a partner in the Law Firm Latham & Watkins in Washington, D.C. He is also an Independent Director at Wal-Mart Stores Inc. It is because of this diverse back ground that Mr. Sorenson falls into the Contingency Leadership Theory.
Contingency Leadership is defined has the attempt to explain the appropriate leadership style based on the leader, followers, and situation (Lussier, & Achua 2010).
