The set starts out with every member of the band coming out on stage one at a time. Some of the instruments I recognized and was familiar with, such as the saxophone, clarinet, bass, and drums. They introduced a variety of instruments that looked either homemade or sounded strange to me, like the electric banjo, drumitar, and synthesizers. There was a bit of scat vocals done by Victor Wooten as well. One thing I noticed in this song was the repetition. I think the bass line was constant throughout the entire four minute long song. The set looked very non-Western to me, especially the rugs that were laid down in the middle of the stage. Almost the entire song had a mixed meter and…

The song does not follow a conventional verse-chorus structure. The structure is introduction, section A, section B, section B1, section A1, outro. The introduction sets the breathy and excited mood in the repeated riff of the accompaniment. Features of this riff are the tritone, syncopated rhythm, jazz inspired harmony and a three note ostinato bass. Section A begins piano which then crescendos into a fast loud phrase.…

It wasn’t until a minute and a half until the drums and upright bass came in. The co leaders (Wendholt & Kolker) introduced this song with their own solos. The actual song by Thelonious Monk, had a more classy vibe, whereas the quartet had a more jumbled vibe. They definitely included their own style into this song. One thing I observed with the drums at a jazz club, the drum sticks are held differently. Instead of a vertical hit, the sticks are held with a tilt, so its like the drummer is flicking the drum. The next song they performed, “Coo Coo”, is actually written by Kolker, the saxophonist. He told the audience he wrote it for someone a while back, hence the title of the song was what he thought of them. It is a very fast paced song, more with a funk element. It featured a trumpet and saxophone solo, and it was very visible that the drummer was working hard throughout the whole song. There were times of purposeful dissonance and had many dynamics which made the song have a mysterious feel. The saxophonist and trumpeter carried the melody through certain parts of the song. They were very much into the song, espcially in this one because one of the members actually wrote the song. The bassist and the drummer had a special connection, they really blended together. The third and final song was by Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, entitled “Halucha”. This was the hardest piece out of all, the bassist was working very intently and the drummer had his own…

Many small businesses and nonprofit organizations assiduously avoid more than a cursory flirtation with marketing research because they misunderstand what it is and what it can accomplish. Five misconceptions often dominate managers’ thinking about it: 1. The “big decision” myth. You turn to marketing research only when you have a major decision to make; otherwise it has little to do with the details of day-to-day decision making. 2. The “survey myopia” myth. With its random samples, questionnaires, computer printouts, and statistical analyses, marketing research is synonymous with field survey research. 3. The “big bucks” myth. Marketing research is so expensive that it can only be used by the wealthiest organizations, and then only for their major decisions. 4. The “sophisticated researcher” myth. Since research involves complex and advanced technology, only trained experts can and should pursue it. 5. The “most research is not read” myth. A very high proportion of marketing research is irrelevant to managers or simply confirms what they already know. Often the research is so poorly designed and written up or so esoteric that it simply ends up in the bottom drawer. In this article I consider each of the myths and show why they are misleading. Then I suggest several approaches to low-cost research. The “Big Decision” Myth Too often, marketing research is deemed necessary only for decisions involving large financial stakes and in such cases should always be carried out. But research should be viewed from a cost-benefit perspective. Its costs are usually of two types—the expenses for the research itself and the amount of lost sales and lost competitive advantage caused by delaying a decision until the results are in. The benefits result from improving the quality of decisions under consideration. Any improvement, in turn, is a function of the stakes involved and how uncertain you are about the rightness of…
