I have chosen to export beer to Japan. Japan continues to be one of the top generally beer-consuming nations in the world and consumers have high disposable income and there is an increasing demand for sphere beers in Japan. Our goal is maximizing profits by utilizing opportunities in foreign markets that don't exist in the domestic market, and thus reaching stable sales and profit gains through cross-border sales.
The Japanese beer industry is again at a cross roads as to what segment of the beer market will see high growth over the next ten years. The current market size of the beer industry in Japan is 6 532 000 kilolitres, is still the seventh largest beer industry in the world in a country with high disposable income. Recent key factors point to a wider acceptance of bolder flavored beers and a 30% increase in imported beer sales between 2000 and 2009 (Green, 2008).
We will be using a carnet also known as merchandise passport as a document that helps the temporary importation of products into foreign countries by eliminating tariffs and value-added taxes or the posting of a security deposit normally required at the time of importation (SBEA, 2005). Import licenses are the responsibility of the importer. Including a copy with the rest of your documentation, however, can sometimes help avoid problems with customs in the destination country.
A tariff is a tax on goods upon importation. When a ship arrives in port a customs officer inspects the contents and charges a tax according to the tariff formula. Since the goods cannot be landed until the tax is paid, it is the easiest tax to collect, and the cost of collection is small (Japan Customs, 2009).
