A Brief History of Cannabis

“Cannabis is the most widely used drug in the world. It has also been uncovered that it is the one plant in the world, which yields a drug as well as useful fiber.”(ukcia) As long as anything can be documented, they say cannabis has been part of world culture, since the times of the Romans.   It was a gift, which Helen brought to Troy from Egyptian Thebes. (ukcia) It is believed Cannabis made its way to Europe around 500 BC. (ukcia) It was quickly recognized that the plant itself yielded a type of fiber called “HEMP”. (ukcia) Cloth made from hemp was common in central and southern Europe in the 13th century and remained popular with succeeding generations. Fine Italian linen was made from hemp as well as flax and in many cases the two were mixed in the same material.

As time has advanced, and we have come into the 21st century, marijuana has become an issue, which correlates to crime, broken homes, and a substance, which stands in the way of success in life. Observers criticize that marijuana has become a gateway for recreational drug use, not only in British Columbia, but around the world as well. Its ability to harvest in almost any climate, and with technology, allowing people to generate an ideal climate, through lighting, it is safe to say marijuana is the most accessible drug in the world.

Its status as an illicit drug in many countries around the world, has given non-marijuana users a perception, which is bias. The media, and the government have set this negative image.

In British Columbia, recreational drug use has become a way of life for many residents and visitors.
