Marijuana is a drug smoked, illegally, by millions every day. According to Marijuana Facts, the drug tends to give the user a euphoric experience, exiling stress and calming the nerves. Many users say that it also stimulates appetite. According to Web MD, Marijuana has never been the cause of a death, unlike alcohol. As a citizen brought up during the slow downfall of our economy, I realize I need to pay attention to ways that our economy can be stimulated. The legalization of marijuana is a sensible way to stimulate our economy in our time of need. The drug is less dangerous than alcohol, and therefore should be legalized.
Keeping Marijuana illegal proposes two serious problems. As I speak, The United States is roughly 15 trillion dollars in debt and keeping Marijuana illegal is extremely expensive. Another major issue with keeping Marijuana illegal is that we are allowing Marijuana to be put into drug dealer's hands while we could be distributing it in a way that can aid our sinking economy.
There are obviously countless amounts of causes for the national debt, but we will focus on one. Our country’s law enforcement wastes their time and money far too often on minor marijuana related offenses. According to the book “Reefer Madness” by Eric Schlosser, a man will get in more trouble for sitting on his couch smoking marijuana with his car parked safely in the driveway, than a man who is caught driving under the influence. We are wasting space in jail, we are wasting the time of our police officers, and most importantly we are wasting our countries much needed money on people committing minor offenses related to marijuana. The Conservative Case for Legalizing Marijuana article in Newsweek states, “According to the much-discussed study, legalizing the illicit drug would save the government $41.3 billion a year in law-enforcement costs”.
