MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

What is manufacturing:
Manufacturing is a Latin word. ‘Manu’ means ‘Hand’ and ‘Facts’ means ‘Made By’.
Manufacturing is defined as:
“Process of converting raw material into the useful products by considering,
1. Design of the product.
2. Selection of the material.
3. Sequence of processes by which it is manufactured”.
Manufacturing Engineering:
“Manufacturing engineering is a discipline of engineering dealing with different manufacturing practices and the research and development of systems, processes, machines, tools and equipment”.
It also defined as,
“Manufacturing engineering includes product design and manufacturing system design as well as operation of the factory”.
It dealing with machines that turn raw materials to a new product. Engineering activities involved in the creation and operation of the technical processes that convert raw materials, energy, and purchased items into components for sale to other manufacturers. In particular, manufacturing engineering involves the analysis and modification of product designs so as to assure manufacturability; the design, selection, specification and optimization of the required equipment, tooling, processes and operations and the determination of other technical matters required to make a given product according to the desired volume, timetable, quality level and other specifications. Manufacturing Engineering has many important branches.

Manufacturing complex activities are,
1. Product design
2. Machinery and tooling
3. Process planning
4. Purchasing
5. Manufacturing
6. Marketing
7. Sales
8. Shipping

A manufacturing engineer role rotates around reporting of production data to management and working together with the supervisors. They are only concerned about the day to day activities where the industrial focuses on the long term ones. An industrial engineer on the other hand is connected to the continuous process associated with unstructured product contrary to the production of distinct products with a specific shape. If the company produces goods in bulk then manufacturing engineer is the most appropriate term to use. Nevertheless one should not confuse industrial engineering with industrial design. Unlike Industrial engineering industrial designer require more artistic and human skills.…

Ever since I fascinated mechanical engineering, I came to realize how important the way of finding raw components to make a product or service. The factory/workplace would be a chaos without the art of managing the material throughout the process of manufacturing to delivering it to consumers. It is like making strategic plans and making moves ahead and solving problems that you can’t expect sometimes. Whenever a person sees a finished and polished product at a store, he may not realize the painstaking process which needs a raw material to be finished in to a lucrative product. But I always imagine the art of manufacturing behind it and awe the people and machineries involved in the job.…

Manufacturing is the production of goods for use or sale using labor and machines, tools, chemical and biological processing, or formulation. The term may refer to a range of human activity, from handicraft to high tech, but is most commonly applied to industrial production, in which raw materials are transformed into finished goods on a large scale. Such finished goods may be used for manufacturing other, more complex products, such as aircraft, household appliances or automobiles, or sold to wholesalers, who in turn sell them to retailers, who then sell them to end users – the "consumers". Manufacturing takes turns under all types of economic systems. In a free market economy, manufacturing is usually directed toward the mass production of products for sale to consumers at a profit. In a collectivist economy, manufacturing is more…

Engineering is an emergent field that continuously evolves to suit the rapid changes of a globalized world over centuries. Engineering fields are frequently refining upon present designs and procedures to make life simple and easier. For engineering to be as evolutionary the implementation of technology is necessary to make processes simple and easy which in engineering terms are mean fast and accurate. Simple refers to be consumption of valuable time in assembly or specific task and easy meaning number of times process or task is done with little or no technical difficulty. Engineering is described as “the application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems”. This type of engineering is more commonly known as Forward Engineering. A developing engineering concept is exploiting forward engineering in a reverse manner. This method is further usually referred to as Reverse Engineering.…
