School elections guidelines

Preface
Elections are the process of choosing a person or a group of people for a position, usually by voting. The election process builds leadership and social skills in students, it provides opportunity to build values of fairness, justice and responsibility, as well as understanding and experience of a democratic process which is centred on citizenship education. It is for these reasons that The Education Board of the Cameroon Baptist Convention (CBC) and The Presbyterian Education Authority of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) have produced guidelines for good practice in the running of school elections in their schools. It fits CBC and PCC’s goal to enhance learneroriented teaching and learning strategies, teaching for liberation that will enable learners to cope with the challenges of our rapidly changing world. School elections are an opportunity for learning and teaching through practice, skills that will serve as foundations for student’s personal and professional development and enable our young people to build a successful society for themselves. These guidelines were produced using a participatory approach – 34 schools were surveyed, to understand current practices, reasons for using these, advantages, disadvantages, and suggestions for change: 124 school administrators, 124 teachers, 240 students and 120 prefects contributed, from Baptist, Presbyterian, Catholic, government and lay private schools. Students said what they had learned from having elections in schools – good and bad things. This enabled us to come out with a framework of modern, standardised guidelines, codes of conduct, background information

In POLS2017, the problems arising in Australian politics have been demonstrated with a decision-making exercise, to educate students on how a political system is formed and executed in Australian society. The issue that was debated was whether student participation and engagement in the subject should be assessed. Thus, in tutorials a political process was designed to decide on a participation percentage. Issues in the Australian political system such delegating representation for citizens and youth political engagement/detachment were reflected in the decision-making exercise.…

At the end of the school day, I attended the meeting for those who signed up. As I looked around the media center, I knew being elected would be harder than I expected. Not only were there ten or so people from my house alone, but several were friends of mine! Naturally, worries went through me. How could I compete against my friends? What if only one of us wins? How will the rest of us feel? Will our friendship be affected? Although I knew I must stay focused on myself…

In our life, we are always facing new experiences either in school, at home, or in the workplace. I am twenty five years old now and I have faced many experiences and challenges that I probably forgot about them. In fact, the best experience that I had in my life is when I was a candidate for the municipal elections in my country four years ago. This was for me the best challenging involvement in my life. This was in 2009 where the municipal elections took place in my neighboorhoud. I was a member of a political party called PPS (PARTI pour le PROGRES et le SOCIALISM).Back then, my age was 21 years old and I was selected to be part of the candidat because this was a strategy of the political parti to bring young people and new vision for our district in Rabat called HAY Riad. The election campaign lasted ten days. In fact, we were five candidates from the same parti to compete with others since only five candidates had the right to be elected. Personally, I was happy, motivated but at the same time I xas worried to disappoint my district and afraid from our competitors because in politics we have to deal with different type of people even those that might be hypocrit to you during all the campaign period. Therefore, in order to compete in an effecient way, we had to set a strategy to follow. First, we nominated a director for our campaign who was experienced in this field. He set up a planning for us for the whole ten days of our campaign. Then, he started puting a map of our area in the office we used to meet in . He divided the neighboorhoud into five parts in which each of us was leaving. Then , he set a strategy to reach the whole electors within ten days. Everyday, we met in front of his office at 8 am in order to get our daily tasks and at the end of the day we were required to handle a report with our feedback and results in order for him to see if the strategies fit with our objectives. I can’t forget my first day where I had to knock on the door of…
