Manifest Destiny DBQ
Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States had the god given right to expand throughout the country from the East coast to the West coast. The term Manifest Destiny was created by John L. O’Sullivan in 1845. Acquiring all the land the U.S had was a long process that took several decades to fully accomplish. Many treaties were formed between countries, land disputes, and land given to the U.S. from other countries was some results of Manifest Destiny. The United States took about sixty-three year to acquire the land from the east coast to the west coast. The Treaty of Paris (1783) gave the U.S. the territory from the borders of the thirteen original colonies up westward to the Mississippi River. The Treaty of Paris gave the U.S. twelve states which included: Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, etc. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson then made the Louisiana Purchase from France, approximately cost fifteen million dollars. The Louisiana Purchase not only doubled the size of the still growing U.S. it also carved out about another twelve states including Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, etc. The Oregon Territory; included Oregon, Idaho, and Washington, was given to the united states after failing to agree on how to split the territory. Texas became part of the United States in 1845 after being annexed from Mexico. This commenced Mexican-American War began in 1846 when Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande and attacked Taylor’s troops. The war was for revenge against the United States for not only taking Texas after it was annexed, but also that the U.S. wanted to buy California from Mexico and the fact that the united states owned slaves which the Mexicans hated slaveholders. (The Pageant, pages 391-392) The Mexican Cession in 1848 was given to the U.S. because of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.
