In the book Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli, the author helps us to understand many important life lessons that mostly deal with racism and the importance of friends and family. Jerry also shows us that Maniac is patient, determined, and he really wants to be loved and understood. This book takes place in the late 1900s in Pennsylvania. It specifically takes place in West End, East End, and Two Mills.
The main character is Maniac Magee, but he is known as Jeffery Magee in the beginning. Some minor characters are Amanda Beale a nice girl that Jeffery met, McNab, a big mean white kid, Mars Bar, who bullies Jeffery, Earl Grayson, Maniac’s second real caretaker, and Russel & Piper, McNab’s younger brothers. That was the beginning of his run and search for a real home. He ended up in the town of Two Mills, two hundred miles away from his aunt and uncle. Then, Jeffrey meats a black girl called Amanda Beale, who introduced him to the town and told him that this town is divided by race into East and West Ends. In Two Mills, he was called "Maniac Magee" after defeating John McNab, a giant five feet eight twelve year old child, in a baseball game. McNab was a member of the Cobras, a survivalist gang who hates and fear blacks. Then Amanda invited Maniac to come over to her house, and finding out that he was homeless he started to live with them. One day at Cobble's Corner, Maniac took a challenge at Cobble's Knot. He won, getting a life time supply of pizza....
