Manhattan Project Essay
What is the Manhattan project you may ask. Well, the Manhattan project is when the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom all like tag teamed together to create the first atomic bomb during World War II. In order for us to create the first atomic bomb we needed to put in a lot of money, time, and work. In that case, we had to build many factories and we needed to hire many workers. People got to work right away and so two types of atomic bombs were created during WW2. Not a lot of people tend to care about the Manhattan Project, but because they don’t really know about it. This was not just any kind of project; it was important and very protected. The Manhattan Project was a very historical mark; many chemicals and different kinds of things were put into this project. The Manhattan project consisted of using uranium a lot. Problem was that at those times it was too hard to get uranium. The reason they needed uranium was to keep up with a chain reaction. In order to use uranium with the atomic bomb it must be 235, because it is a fissionable element. Another reason why uranium is used is because its atoms are unusually large, and because of that, it is hard for them to hold together firmly. However, uranium is not alone. Uranium is not the only material used for making atomic bombs. Another material is the element Plutonium, in its isotope Pu-239. However, Plutonium will not start a fast chain reaction by itself. The material is not fissionable in and of itself, but may act as a catalyst to the greater reaction. The bomb basically works with a detonating head starting off the explosive chain reaction. Those are two very important elements in atomic bombs that were used in experimenting with the Manhattan Project. Albert Einstein was a very important scientist while experimenting with the Manhattan project. As a matter of fact, he brought the idea over to President Roosevelt when he was able to...
