Managing Ethics
Ethics is the center of leadership. Leaders serve as ethical officers, enhancing credibility, storing and restoring trust, appearing as role models and demonstrating good positive attitudes towards others. This may appear to be a lot for an individual in a leadership position.   However, if certain values are absent as a leader, unethical managing comes into play. This is how HR will come in to play, if an unethical situation is apparent. Unethical management can be avoided when certain principles are exemplified such as, a business code of ethics, quality of communication and values.
A business code of ethics ascertains company values, obligations and business practices. Code of ethics is critical in managing ethics, because personal integrity is a key element found in leaders. A leader’s integrity aligns with personal behaviors such as honesty, reliability and consistency pertaining to values and behaviors demonstrated within an organization. The absence of integrity within a leader, leads to unethical behavior within an organization.
In managing ethics within an organization, communication must be affective at all times. Leaders have a vast amount of influence due to how they exercise their authority and communicate to their employees. In portraying positive ethics, communication must be affective to avoid unethical behaviors. In order to communicate effectively, a leader must consider their audience, whether it is verbal or written, and portray clear concise objectives and needs for the organization to their employees. Through my experiences and observance of my leaders, poor communication is characteristic of leaders that lack integrity. These leaders appear not to value the organization, but are instead interested in collecting a paycheck and gaining a higher position for title purposes only within the company.
