I think the ethical implications for requiring an employee to dedicate long hours and extensive travel should be up to the employee’s. If an employee wants to devote that much time and effort into their job that is totally up to them. Even though I know a few employers that try to push it on to their employees by telling them they will lose hours or even lose their job if they do not do this.
I think as a manager or employer that it needs to a company agreement hold a group meeting to see who would be interested in doing this and who has other obligations that keep them from doing this. If there needs to be arrangements made for those with a family them they need to be made. An employee should not have to worry about if they are going to have a job in the morning or not because they couldn’t travel or stay later than normal.
I have had several experiences with this in many different situations. I have been told by an employer that if I didn’t stay late or didn’t cover someone’s shift I was going to lose hours until I had no hours. I would be fired if I didn’t show up to cover someone’s shift, even if I have other plans. I have been fired for not covering someone’s shift when I told them I could not do it. I have been written up for not staying late because my kids got sick.
I think I have had every consequence in the book given to me if I didn’t do what an employer demanded me to do. I think that it needs to be a decision made the employees not just the manager. I have bosses that completely understood because they too had families. The ones I have always had the problems with were always the ones that don’t have to worry about kids or a significant other to take care of. As a manager at one time myself I have learned you need to learn to be understanding to everyone and their needs to be a successful manager.
