Types of Information Systems

Information systems and Management Information System (MIS) are broader categories that include ERP. Information technology management concerns the operation and organization of information technology resources independent of their purpose. Most management information systems specialize in particular commercial and industrial sectors, aspects of the enterprise, or management substructure. Four main types of information systems are:

Management information systems (MIS) produce fixed, regularly scheduled reports based on data extracted and summarized from the firm’s underlying transaction processing systems to middle and operational level managers to identify and inform structured and semi-structured decision problems. •A transaction processing system (TPS) or transaction server is a software system, or software/hardware combination, that supports transaction processing. Transaction processing systems also attempt to provide predictable response times to requests, although this is not as critical as for real-time systems. Rather than allowing the user to run arbitrary programs as time-sharing, transaction processing allows only predefined, structured transactions. •Decision Support Systems (DSS): A properly designed DSS is an interactive software-based system intended to help decision makers compile useful information from a combination of raw data, documents, and personal knowledge, or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions. •Executive Information Systems (EIS) is a reporting tool that provides quick access to summarized reports coming from all company levels and departments such as accounting, human resources and operations.
