Leadership has become a popular subject now especially with the enormous changes in the health care systems in Malaysia.   Over the years, several national developments have impacted health care in this country.   The first was, the healthcare organizations were revamped; as a consequence of the rapid growth of aligned-lives health care (managed care), while endeavoring for a slow acceleration of national healthcare economics.   The second was the change in the place of care from hospitals to community and to outpatient sites, nowadays.   Third, there was also a change from periodic care to preventive care.   At present, our workplace has been progressively more driven by innovation and technological revolution (Zambahari, 2007).

Porter-O’Grady (2003) rightly points out that, when changes of this   magnitude take place, a call for leaders to learn new roles and expand new skills is pivotal.   In United Kingdom, the National Health Service (NHS) Trust have endorsed the development of leadership in many of their policy documents, realizing its ability in implementing change and making continuous improvement in patient outcomes (Mc Kenna et al., 2004).   It is definite now that the importance of leadership is also apparent globally (Hewinson and Griffiths, 2004;   Davidson et al.,   2006).   The opinion of Jooste (2004) is that the 21st century timeframe demands different leadership approaches; therefore, nurse leaders must recognize their important role in taking the lead in challenges.   Sometime ago in 1997, Pesut have urged nurses to embrace a future-think perspective by leaving behind the ‘wait and see’ attitude.   Being the manager in the...
