Way back in 1962, the famous landmark that we now see in the developed America used to be an empty lot in a quiet small town. However, recently, almost anyone in America have can already have easy access to the largest retail outlet in the world, Wal-Mart. The long travels are over just to buy grocery items, as Wal-Mart stores are already scattered all over America. Wal-Mart had its humble beginning in 1962 under the initiative of Sam Walton, an expert in retail and merchandise. It did not take him long enough to develop Wal-Mart into a bigger business and expand in many locations in America, and eventually into several international locations (Wal-Mart Retail Divisions, 2010). Sam achieved having such a huge and fast achievement through his leadership and management principles and practices. What can be considered as the strength of Sam’s management is his high regards for the people, and their culture and values. This principle helped a lot in allowing Sam achieve his vision for Wal-Mart to be the largest discount retail store in America. In this paper, we will establish the differences between leadership and management, their respective roles and responsibilities, and how they impact the health of the organization and influence the organizational culture to be imposed in the company. The paper will also explore the four functions of management and how they were used in the context of Wal-Mart. Lastly, recommendations will also be made with regards to maintaining a healthy organizational culture.
Effective leadership means being able to motivate the employees to work and operate by the standards set by the company, while still encouraging positive outlook and performance.
