In aviation business today, the most successful companies are not just the ones who have the best planes or the best engines. Aviation is a human industry and the company has the most effective flight crews is the company that does best in passenger satisfaction and flight efficiency. To bring the best performance out of those crews, they need to be properly managed and monitored by leaders. The CASA example of “Airtime” shows the problems on a Rover airlines crew of Captain John and co pilot Robert, who have some serious team conflict and required some better management from their chief pilot Barry. Business needs teamwork to survive (Castro,1994) thus teamwork management is an importance part to get success in any businesses as it increases customer satisfaction, product and service quality, employee job satisfaction and decision-making (William and McWilliam,2010). Rover Airlines is not different and the three big issues there are personality differences, physical and emotional factors, and mismanaged workload. Each issue will be looked at below and strategies provided that Barry should use to fight them and get the best out of his team. Perhaps the most immediately recognizable issue with the relationship between captain John and co-pilot Robert is their different character. In aviation, as in any human industry, people will be different and they have different personality and they will have different way to solve the same problem. Therefore, a major part of being a manager is able to recognize employee’s characters to training and teaching them to overcome the differences and solve problems constructively. In “Airtime”, the relationship between the two positions is too steep until they have some difficulty on their communication and eventually effectiveness as metro crews. In the “Airtime” drama, there are several scenes showing that John put all responsibilities and faults to Robert. Robert, instead of making an argument or point to the exact problems, just kept quiet and put the pressure on himself. Captain has over 10,000 hours and he overconfident in his experience. He really thinks that he superior than Robert as he can order Robert to do anything and blame him when things go wrong. Robert also believes in this power gradient because he is younger and has less experience than John, both in the air and with the company. As study in Human being pilot book refer that Robert has nurturing character while John has aggressive characters and that make the situation in the cockpit have an even higher steepness relationship between captain and co-pilot (Robson,2008). 2

These personalities clash easily leads to incident (Robert missing NOTAM) or even severe accident situation (near miss with glider). Barry as in the role of manager, must know that “the key to dealing with team conflict is not avoiding it”(William, McWilliam, 2010). Team conflict can raise the team performance as cognitive conflict when people has different ideas on how to solve the problem goal and together choose the best solution. Mismanaged team conflict can lead to affective conflict where people begin to disagree in personal level instead of professional level and they get upset and don’t want to communicate to solve the problem together, as in the case of John and Robert. Barry should get Robert and John to proper meeting to know each others character, personality and behaviors before they start working together to avoid interpersonal...
