The Sacrament of Waiting by Fr. James Donelan, S.J.
The English poet John Milton wrote that those who serve are only those who stand and wait. I think I would go further and say that those who wait render the highest form of service.
Waiting requires more discipline, more self-control and emotional maturity, more unshakable faith in our cause, more unwavering hope in the future, more sustaining love in our hearts that all the greatest deeds of derring-do go by the name of action.
Waiting is a mystery - a natural sacrament of life - there is a meaning hidden in all the times we have to wait. It must be an important mystery because there is so much waiting in our lives.
Everyday is filled with those little moments of waiting (testing our patience and our nerves, schooling us in self-control). We wait for meals to be served, for a letter to arrive, for a friend to call or show up for a date. We wait in line at cinemas and theaters, concerts and circuses. Our airline terminals, railway stations and bus depots are great temples of waiting filled with men and women who wait in joy for the arrival of a loved one - or wait in sadness to say goodbye and give the last wave of hand. We wait for springs to come - or autumn – for the rains to begin and stop. And we wait for ourselves to grow from childhood to maturity. We wait for those inner voices that tell us when we are ready for the next stop. We wait for graduation, for our first job, our first promotion. We wait for success and recognition. We wait to grow up - to reach the stage where we make our own decisions.
We cannot remove this waiting from our lives. It is a part of the tapestry of living – the fabric in which the threads are woven to tell the story of our lives.
Yet current philosophies would have us forget the need to wait. "Grab all the gusto you can get!" So reads one of America's greatest beer ads - get it now! Instant pleasure, instant transcendence. Do not wait for anything. Life is

Deferred gratification, or delayed gratification is the ability to resist the temptation for an immediate reward and wait for a later reward. Generally, delayed gratification is associated with resisting a smaller but more immediate reward in order to receive a larger or more enduring reward later. In a few words, replace the small rewards with a bigger but including some disciplines and sacrifice.…

Waiting is not easy: waiting is a difficult and time consuming process. It can even be irritating and aggravating. Impatience in many cases can cause doubt. It is particularly difficult to wait on God to answer your prayers. You know that you are a saint, a child of God and storms are brewing in your life and in the midst of your situation you call on God but He has not answered you yet. The storm is still ragging, you don’t know how much you can take and it appears that the worst is about to happen; you may wonder “where is God”.…

There’s a great quote written by Dr. Seuss in his book “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”, “You can get so confused that you'll start in to race down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space, headed, I fear, toward a most useless place: The Waiting Place...”, in which people idle, doing nothing but waiting for events to occur in vain.…

It is not rushing things to happen but letting them happen on its own. They always say good things come to those who wait! This is not to say wait passively for change to happen, but to work towards a goal and give it timeout expect to see change overnight, it takes time.” Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet” (Aristotle). In this quote is saying it may be a tough task but in the end the reward will be great. A great example of patience in article about a New York taxi driver. It’s about instead of just honking his horn and driving off. The drive went and knocked on the door, an older women answered with a suitcase. Once they were in the taxi, he learned that she was on her way to hospice and had no family left. So he drove her around where ever she wanted to go until she got tired and was ready to go to her destination the article he stated “What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift? What if I had to take the run, or had honked once, then driven away?” (Elite Daily,2013). The driver’s patience helped him to learn a valuable lesson that…

There is a link between self control and instant/delayed gratification. For instance self control and delayed gratification are similar in many ways like being about to wait for something rather than just taking it right then. Another reason that that are linked in self control plays a big role in delayed gratification because a person has to be able to control his/her self in order to wait for something. Lastly the three are linked because delayed gratification and self control both require a person to practice, or be taught in some sort of…

"Great things come to those who wait." Said Violet Fane 124 years ago and that still can't be anymore true today. This is shown in "The People Could Fly" by Virgina Hamilton, The Diary of Anna Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, and "They did what no one did before" by San Jose Mercury News. All these stories shows that patience is an important virtue, but it also shows that as long as you have patience you will be able to survive anything.…
