Making a difference in the world is something that is very important to me. We are only in this world for a short period of time and I want to leave a positive mark on society.
One of the problems in today’s society is childhood obesity and inactivity. Obesity is a growing epidemic in America that affects all age ranges. Poor diet, video games and computers have led to this increasing problem. Approximately 15.3 percent of children (ages 6-11) and 15.5 percent of adolescents (ages 12-19) were overweight in 2000. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has steadily increased over the years among genders, all ages, all racial/ethnic groups and all educational levels.   About 25 percent of young people (ages 12-21) report no physical activity. The percentage of children and adolescents who are defined as overweight has more than doubled since the early 1970’s. Today’s children eat as much as triple the amount of snack foods their counterparts were consuming just 20 years ago. Many diseases such as diabetes and heart disease are linked to obesity. I would like to become a physical education teacher in order to help with this problem.   All of my life I have been involved in sports. It has helped to keep me active, in shape and healthy.   A few years ago I started helping train my younger brother’s soccer team. Teaching them the sport and helping them stay active was something that I really enjoyed. By being a positive role model and encouraging children to eat healthier and stay active I could fight childhood obesity. If we do not do something about this problem we will have an even greater problem with adult obesity in the future.
By becoming a physical education teacher I feel that I can really make a difference in the world. Learning healthy eating habits and exercise routines in childhood are the first steps to preventing obesity. Also learning to maintain a healthy weight is essential to a healthy life.
