Major Persuasive Speech
Luis Salamanca
October 30, 2010

Topic
Cars

Title
To Drive or Not to Drive

General Purpose
To persuade

Specific Purpose
To explain to my audience the problem of cars that give off too much carbon emissions, and to persuade them to start using more eco-friendly methods of transportation.

Organizational Pattern
Problem-solution

Sub-Goal for Persuasion
Adoption

Action Step
I want the audience to start using eco-friendly transportation methods by using public transportation, walking, or using an alternative vehicle, such as hybrids or electric cars.

Main Points
I. Driving cars with high carbon emissions is a problem because (A.) it will slowly kill us via the greenhouse effect, and (B.) it will deplete our planet of non-renewable recourses. II. The solution is (A.) to drive an eco-friendly vehicle or (B.) to use alternate transportation.

Thesis Statement
Driving cars with high carbon emissions is a problem because it will slowly kill us via the greenhouse effect, and it will deplete our planet of non-renewable recourses. The solution is to drive an eco-friendly vehicle or to use alternate transportation

Introduction
Attention Getter
Do you know if you are aiding in the slow demise of our planet? If you are driving or know someone who does a car that releases carbon dioxide emissions you are. We all depend on our vehicles to get us to those great memories, like the beach or a wedding. (Statistic) According to Worldbank.org, in 2006, the United States carbon dioxide emission per capita was 19.27 metric tons. This means that that year a person averaged 19.27 metric tons of carbon Dioxide emissions, most of the coming from m their vehicle. (Appeal to Emotions) Is having the best-looking car around worth the demise of the atmosphere of the planet? You can still have the coolest car without damaging the atmosphere.

Establishing Credibility
I care about the health of our planet and about the car that I drive. This is why I researched this topic.

Thesis Statement
Driving cars with high carbon dioxide emissions is a problem because it will slowly kill us via the greenhouse effect and it will deplete our planet of non-renewable recourses. The solution is to drive an eco-friendly vehicle or to use public transportation or to walk.

Action
I will persuade you to drive eco-friendly vehicles or to use an alternative method of transport.

Transition
First, I’ll describe the problem.

Body
I Driving cars with high carbon dioxide emissions is a problem because it will slowly kill us via the greenhouse effect and it will deplete our planet of nonrenewable resources. A Driving cars with high carbon emissions will slowly kill the planet via the greenhouse effect. a The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps gases in the atmosphere. Since the 1700, the beginning of the Industrial revolution, the burning of (definition) fossil fuels, fuels formed from organic matter over many years, coal and natural gas are examples (example). b According to the Environmental Defense Fund, scientists estimate that the global average temperature might increase as much as 12°F by the year 2100. (Appeal to Security). c The planet Venus is an extreme example of the consequences of the greenhouse effect. The planet Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system due to the thick clouds that capture heat and gases. B Driving vehicles that release high carbon emissions will eventually deplete our planet of its non-renewable recourses. d According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the average car releases 575 pounds of carbon monoxide for every 12500 miles. The average light truck releases 854 pounds of carbon monoxide for every 14000 miles used. e Cars release large amounts of excess carbon monoxide that is harmful to the environment and it could kill us.(Appeal to Emotions)...
