“The Magic Carpet Ride”

The author of “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” Gabriel Marquez, was a man ahead of his time. The concept of Magical Realism was brought forth in the early twentieth century, but not many people were in favor of it or could grasp the concept. One could compare it to a balanced diet; In the most simplest form, Magical Realism gives an even combination of reality and fairy tales. Magical Realism has different definitions; however, they all relatively share the same concept. The saying is categorized as an unexpected alteration of reality, a figment of the imagination. The concept merges elements one would tend to think are opposites. Indeed in our reality they are opposites, but in the reality of magical realism, myths and facts are tied together and therefore make sense. In other words, they go together; like peanut butter and jelly. This genre of literature has several characteristics that make it noticeable to tell that it's Magical Realism. The main one is that the concept causes the reader to have two different perspectives of the story's reality. The two perspectives nearly intersect one another like perpendicular lines on a plane. Identity usually is questioned, and time revolves around history as opposed to history revolving around time. Magical Realism throws in a presence of magic that can't be explained by logical theories. If literature were a math problem, X would always be solved in the equation, like fantasy's always yield a “happily ever after.” In this category, the limit does not exist and this genre would be considered infinity. A myth or fantasy state of mind comes in to the realist view that banters about normal, Average-Joe, every day occurences. Magical Realism has a sort of charm embedded in the words of the text, where literary devices are taken as reality. A child-like view is subconciously or underlying there to give the reader a better understanding; hence A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings was perceived...
