Machiavelli Script
Julie . Isrrael . Toni . Danielle . Julie:
Welcome to the royal debate for our prince. Today we have Candidate 1, Prince Giuliano de
Medici and Candidate 2, Prince Lorenzo di Piero de Medici. Toni:
Candidate 1 will be asked their views regarding a topic. Following Candidate 1’s response,
Candidate 2 will be given a chance to provide a rebutal.
We will begin the debate with military matters. (?) Julie:
As our beautiful country of Italy stands right now with France and Spain trying to gain control over us, should we be focusing on keeping what remains of our country together, or defending and trying to gain back what has been forcefully taken from us? (A) Isrrael: As a wise man once told me, “A prince must not have any other object nor any other thought, nor must he take anything as his profession but war, its institutions, and its discipline.” This being said, I believe that we must try to gain back what has been stolen from us. We must strengthen our military and focus our efforts on winning back our country. The only way to keep and properly rule a country is to maintain the art of war by practicing and studying continuously. (R) Danielle:
On this I would have to agree. Commoners have been able to rise to power and higher status by simply committing themselves to the art of war, while the nobility who have ignored this art have lost power and have been reduced to commoners. (?) Toni:
If you are focused only on war, do you not believe that you may bring ruin to your name and our country instead? Is following the art of military matters so passionately a good example to lead for these citizens? (A) Isrrael: Focusing on the military affairs of our country would only strengthen my rule and protect our country because what country would feel safe under a king who cannot defend himself? And what soldier will obey a leader who does not understand military

national security strategy, “remains the only nation to project and sustain large-scale operations over extended distances.” During his campaign for the presidency, Barack Obama frequently pledged to reform the defense budget. But his defense budget, released in the same week as the QDR, shows no clear- cut separation from the spending habits perpetuated in the budgets of his predecessor, George W. Bush. It allocated more funds for Special Forces, helicopters, missile-launching drones and other equipment for the “asymmetric wars” in Afghanistan and Iraq but it also provided for a new aircraft carrier and attack submarines. My society will address the issues involved within military operations that are currently scrutinized by many individuals in current society. Currently in the United States, the voting system for federal, state and municipal elections allows for a representative government headed by a majority party, yet the President may not in all cases be represented by that party as he or she is elected separately. This being the case, often legislative actions are stalled such as those currently involving…

Throughout America’s history there have been a handful of wars that the United States has been a part of. We have proven that we are a strong country and that we can handle anything that comes our way. Along our journey, we have encountered our share of issues: moral, ethical and constitutional issues, specifically in World War II and the War on Terror. We have seen our leaders lead our country and take us to become one of the most powerful countries in the world. We have also seen leaders take us in another direction.…

The fundamental principles behind our Founding Fathers’ choice to rebel against the tyranny of the British Empire are that people have their innate rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that the government’s function is to defend its citizens from being deprived of these natural rights by foreign or domestic enemies. When the government fails to do this by “amassing too much power and becoming tyrannical,” the people have no choice but to exercise their original right of self-defense – to fight the government. One Founder Alexander Hamilton explicitly asserted this claim, and he entrusted us with his legacy, the Constitution. It is now up to us fight for our rights from our encroaching government.…

In conclusion, Hanson’s narrow-minded view on what the defense cutbacks would do to the fabric of America did not leverage any clear critical thinking or “rationally-based tools that usually leads to a practical decision.”. 2 His summary clearly demonstrates his inability to leverage critical thinking, appealing to his readers fear and a presenting a false dichotomy. “History’s bleak lesson is that those societies with self-reliant citizens who protect themselves and their interests prosper; those who grow dependent cut back their defenses - and waste away.”…

Abraham Lincoln once said, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth”(Lincoln qtd. in “Abraham”). It is not too late to achieve this dream. The Constitution clearly states in the preamble that the sole purpose of the U.S. government is “to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” (U.S Constitution, Preamble). This purpose has been severely muddled since America has taken up the ‘indispensable’ role of policing the world, sometimes overlooking domestic issues that still have not been solved to this day. Without the consideration…

    Machiavelli: a Cynic?

Many writings argue that human kind is born capable of evil things or that they are born either good or evil. Machiavelli argues simply that man is self-centered and only after self preservation. He argues that mankind is immoral and greedy. His opinions are apparent as he states, "It may be said of men in general that they are ungrateful, voluble, dissemblers, anxious to avoid danger, and covetous of gain," in the eighteenth paragraph of The Prince. These thoughts and views have gained him the title of a cynic. More than a cynic however, Machiavelli is but a realist.…

    Machiavelli: The Prince

Throughout my reading of Machiavelli, a particular selection struck me as very interesting. This comes from Chapter 17 when Machiavelli states, “Here a question arises: whether it is better to be loved than feared, or the reverse. The answer is, of course, that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But since the two rarely come together, anyone compelled to choose will find greater security in being feared than in being loved. . . . Love endures by a bond, which men, being scoundrels, may break whenever it serves their advantage to do so; but fear is supported by the dread of pain, which is ever present (Machiavelli 54). I believe this is an interesting question that would be a good topic for debate. Regarding this question, I side with Machiavelli on his reasoning that it is more beneficial to be feared then loved with regards to obedience. Examples of this principle can be seen in our world today. Laws demonstrate this very well. Laws are present to keep society in order, and with disobedience comes penalties. These penalties are what make people obey the law. Without penalties, or using the term pain in an exaggerated sense, most people would continue to break the law being aware that there are no consequences. Fear is what fuels laws to be effective.…

In chapter VIII, Machiavelli believed that the necessity of being cruel is really important for the princes or leaders. He does not hesitate to support the necessity of cruelty and crime in founding power; however the cruelty has to be limited; otherwise the princes will be hated. Machiavelli argued that cruel acts must be committed only as necessary, but all at once and then ceased, so that the populace will forget them. “Hence it should be noted that in talking hold of a state, he who seize it should review all the offenses necessary for him to commit, and do them all at a stroke, so as not to have to renew them everyday and, by not reviewing them, to secure men and gain them to himself with benefits” (Prince, 38). What does Machiavelli mean on entering into evil? Machiavelli believed that as a prince or leader, that person has to know how to do either good by mercy and force by cruelty when it is necessary.…

In the Elizabethan era play Henry IV Part One, written by William Shakespeare in 1597, a similar message was addressed toward the audiences. Even Shakespeare knew the futility of war. This was the reason why even he tried to educate the masses on the idiocrasy involved within the concept of war. A prime example of this is a character by the name of Hotspur. Hotspur is an old fashioned noble, who is obsessed with gaining honour. In fact, you could say that he is a bit fanatical about the concept because, he believes that the only way for true honour to be earned, is by killing another man in war. He believes that the only way for true honour to be earned, is by killing another man during war. This was the mind-set of the nobles in his generation. In Act II, Scene III of Henry IV Part One, Hotspur is arguing with his wife, Lady Percy and, he “angrily insults her, saying that he does not love her and that this is no world for womanly thoughts or for love. Instead, he declares, there must be war and fighting.” The actual quote goes; “Away, you trifler!…
