Machiavelli Paper
Nicolo Machiavelli, The Prince, was born in Florence, Italy and 1469. He was involved in many procedures and dealings such as raising the militia, he was involved with the Body of Ten, he was responsible for foreign affairs of the republic, and worked with Borgia in central Italy. He was unfortunately put in jail for conspiracy where he wrote the Prince and Art of War, after being released. Machiavelli was not allowed anymore in the government’s office because of that. Although there were times like being in jail for Machiavelli, he also showed great leadership, being the first to create a political science based on the study of historical actions.
In The Prince, Machiavelli has no use for those who would imagine utopian states and try to figure out how to achieve them. After considering everything, according to Machiavelli himself, he will realize that if something develops to appear as a vice and will only end up ruining himself. On the other hand, if something appears to be a virtue, the ending will be held in his own protection. (195) A prince must be knowledgeable enough to be able to take care of those virtues so they do not become vices and destroy his state.
Machiavelli rejects the notion of an ideal leader who wants to be good all of the time and clearly believes this particular notion is a waste of time. Machiavelli once said, “A prince must be cautious in believing and in acting; nor should he be afraid of his own shadow; and he should proceed in such a manner, tempered by prudence and humanity, so that too much trust may not render him imprudent nor too much distrust render him intolerable.” According to this saying, Machiavelli believes in supporting and loving his state, but you have to put your foot down sometimes, take the lead, and take action for the appropriate behaviors and situations, like he did himself.
