a) Identify the literary device
b) The meaning and significance of the quotation
“Your face my thane is as a book where men/May read strange matters.” Device: simile
Explanation and significance: Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth how to act during the celebration. His face should be like a book – difficult to read what his intentions are. His thoughts should be hidden. This relates to theme of appearance vs. reality as Macbeth will present himself as a devoted thane to Duncan, but in reality, he is planning to kill Duncan in order to take his position as king. Part D: Short Answer Questions:

1) Review character foils:
a) Macbeth and Banquo
b) Lady Macduff and Lady Macbeth
c) Macbeth and Macduff
2) Imagery – you should be able to reference two examples of each of the following imagery and explain the significance of the image: a) Animal
