Key Quotations Analysis
‘Fair is foul and foul is fair’ – Act 1 Scene 1 Line 12 This quote is important as it mean ‘good is bad and bad is good’. The witches being the supernatural are violating God’s order. ‘When shall we three meet again?’ – Act 1 Scene 1 Line 1 The word ‘when’ in this quote is the first word in the play and as it is a question, it brings up questions. Questions such as who is Macbeth, what are these witches doing? It is an effective way of starting the play and bringing up questions about the supernatural. ‘Hover through fog and filthy air’ – Act 1 Scene 1 Line 13 The use of the word ‘filthy’ bring up the impression of dark deeds and the fact that the supernatural is going to be a key part of the play. And also the use of ‘fog’ is effective as fog is something that blurs your vision, but fades away. Giving the impression of secrets, but the secrets at the end of the play will all be revealed. ‘Come you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts’ – Act 1 Scene 5 Line 39-40 In this line the evil spirits are being called on by Lady Macbeth, to take away all mercy and felling from her body and soul. During that time this would be deemed unspeakable and definitely something from the supernatural world. ‘Is this a dagger I see before me’ – Act 2 Scene 1 Line 33 This phrase is significant as it links to the supernatural again. A hovering hallucination of the dagger is in front of Macbeth, a dagger leading to fulfill the prophecies of the witches. This is significant because we all know that Macbeth was a cowering out of the plan and if he did not see this dagger, which he sees as a sign, he might not have killed King Duncan. The hallucination is produced through supernatural powers. ‘Prithee, see there! Behold! Look! Lo – how say you?’ – Act 3 Scene 4 Line 69 In this seen the supernatural is in the form of a ghost. Macbeth is again hallucinating, like when he saw the dagger. He is seeing the head of those he has murdered. With the thanes...
