Hero vs. Villain
In William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth, starts as a great hero and in the end turn into a murderous villain. Macbeth was a brave and loyal General of the Army of Scotland. He was the great warrior in his country Scotland. Macbeth mercilessly kills his enemies with his sword, and he cuts Macdonwald from his navel to his jaw, as shown in these lines spoken by the Captain, who delivers a report of the war to the King.
For brave Macbeth – well he deserves that name –
Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel,
Which smoked with bloody execution,
Like valor’s minion carved out his passage
Till he faced the slave;
Which nev’r shook hands, nor bade farewell to him,
Till he unseamed him from the nave to th’ chops,
And fixed his head upon our battlements. (I, ii, 16-24)
Macbeth and Banquo “were as cannons overcharged with double cracks,” they went through the enemy “As sparrows eagles.” Macbeth and his worthy friend Banquo led the Scottish people to victory in the war against King of Norway and the Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth and Banquo were so fierce that all of the enemy soldiers were trembling and the Thane of Cawdor took his own life.
Where the Norweyan banners flout the sky
And fan our people cold.
Norway himself, with terrible numbers,
Assisted by that most disloyal traitor
The Thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict;
Till that Bellona’s bridegroom, lapped in proof,
Confronted him with self-comparisons,
Point against point rebellious arm ‘gainst arm,
Curbing his lavish spirit: and, to conclude,
The victory fell on us. (I, ii, 49-58)
Hearing the great news of victory, the overjoyed and humble, king Duncan gives to Macbeth riches beyond Macbeth’s dreams. He gives Macbeth the title of “The Thane of Cawdor” and he gives Macbeth all the Gold, land and all of the other riches the previous Thane of Cawdor had.
