1. ESSAY: (150- 300 words)
In Act 4 Scene1, three apparitions visited the witches and Macbeth. What does each represent? Did the audience believe in the witches as much as Macbeth did? Why/ Why not? What do you think the witches wanted?
Why does Macbeth decide to murder the entire Macduff family? What does this tell us about the changes that have taken place in him since the beginning of the play? Why might this be considered his most shocking act since the beginning of the play?
1. In act 4 scene I, the witches called the apparitions, in order to prophecy the future for Macbeth. Each apparition is different from the other, and that fact indicates that there is a message behind each apparition and each apparition represent something.
The first apparition looks like a head with an armored helmet. This may represent the way that in which Macbeth will eventually be killed, as is written in act 5, Fleance decapitates Macbeth.
The second apparition looks like a bloody child, maybe to rebuke at Macbeth for being evil enough to kill King Duncan while he is asleep, as if he was evil enough to kill a child.
The third apparition looks like a child in a tree in his hand and a crown to his head. This may imply that eventually in despite of Macbeth efforts to prevent it, Banque's descendants will be kings.
I don't think the audience believes in witches as much as Macbeth did, because the audience sees what Macbeth can't see. They see that in act I Macbeth had already became Thane of Cawdor before the witches told him he will, so they actually didn't predict the future, and in fact it is reasonable that they just heard it somewhere and told Macbeth before somebody else would. In addition to that, Macbeth became king only due to his own action, the witches didn't predict his future, they just motivated him to take over the crown.
In my opinion the witches wanted to lead Macbeth to his destruction, so they... [continues]
