Don’t you just hate it when you are all snuggled up, watching your favourite TV programme and it gets to the most thrilling moment and BOOM! Adverts. You can’t escape them. Especially when it’s that awful, irritating Gocompare advertisement. I felt like the first Gocompare commercial went on forever, it was not just some foolish operatic rubbish that lasted for a couple of seconds, it was WORSE! A two minute advert that made your blood boil. It was torture. The two minutes in which the opera singer barged into the cafe singing a dim-witted song, boisterously with a group of people, was so excruciating that the viewers would have preferred being deaf for two minutes, then listening to that terrible voice. Gocompare.com is a British financial services comparison site that provides comparison details for vehicles, pet and home insurance, breakdown cover, utilities and financial products. Due to the popularity of comparethemeerkat.com, a hilarious advert with adorable little Meerkats, Gocompare.com was influenced to advertise their company in a similar way by introducing a character called Gio Compario, a Frenchman who sings the Gocompare song, which over the years has become memorable, but not exactly in a good way. In the years 2009 and 2010 Go compare was voted the worst commercial of the year.
This advert has truly burrowed itself into our heads. Admit it. It happens to almost everyone, you now read the word ‘Gocompare’ and you start singing the song in a dramatic opera style. Gocompare.com’s way of attempting to create a comical advert was not much of a success, however the company were satisfied ‘the strategy and objective of the campaign, is to raise awareness of the Go Compare brand and our company have certainly achieved that’. In addition they were also pleased as it is psychologically proven that songs or melodies are more likely to stick in your head whether you love them or hate them, so the company as far as they were concerned were promoting

    The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos.     Geico is a car insurance company which has used several advertising techniques that address many of the fifteen basic appeals, described by Jib Fowles, to gain potential customers (Fowles 1). For instance, the need for affiliation has been catered to through advertising depicting Geico as the best there is. People tend to affiliate themselves with top companies.
