Love Is Not All

As I read the title of Edna St. Vincent Millay, my first impression is that it belittles love and regards it as unimportant. The succeeding lines prove her point as the reasons why love is not a vital part of life. By saying that it is not meat nor drink, it establishes that love cannot be eaten and relieve us from hunger nor quench our thirst. In addition to that, the author also stated that it is nor a slumber nor a roof against the rain. Slumber may mean to ease our exhaustion since sleeping is the primary means of recuperation. Other than that it gives us no protection from the different natural calamities and occurrences. If viewed from a different perspective, the lack of protection may also mean that love renders us vulnerable to different things and makes us weak and unable to fend for ourselves. The line nor yet a floating spar to man that sink, and rise, and sink and rise and sink again signifies that it does not prevent a person from sinking into depression or sadness and enable him to rise again amidst all the problems and road bumps that may come his way. Love is not responsible for moving forward and it is not a necessity for recovery. Also, love can not fill the thickened lung with breath, nor clean the blood nor set the fractured bone, unmistakably suggests that love is not necessary for us to live nor does it free us from any illness and fix our broken bones. Essentially, the author built an imagery that love is not responsible for the existence of man and we can proceed with out life normally amidst its absence. The Earth will continue to revolve and everyday will go on as usual. Nevertheless, a contradiction to the premises above is presented. It is explained by the line, Yet many a man is making friends with death even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
