Times have changed, but still some things remain the same. As relationships go on, each
person's lust for one another builds and grows stronger. Most people get involved in
relationships because they're looking for that one true love, others just get in relationships for
that one good night. It even happens within friendships. A friend could have an excessive desire
for another friend. Some choose to wait; others choose to satisfy their sexual cravings. In Susan
Minot's "Lust," the narrator lets the reader in on a sequence of events in a teenage girl's sex life.
The girl is overly casual about the act of sex and years ahead of her time in her awareness of her
actions. The author's unique way of revealing to the reader the wild encounters done by this
promiscuous fifteen-year-old girl proves that she doesn't value the importance of sex. The way
Minot portrays this character makes the reader feel as if they were right alongside of this
teenager as she fulfills her sexual desires with these different men. Not everyone is looking for
love through sex, just a way to replace the love they never received.
Determining the outcome of a person can be decided by that person's history. Knowing
things from someone' s past will show you a lot of personal things about them. In this story the
main character shows signs of neglect from both her mother and father. Love from your parents
really know what's going on, especially when you're away at school most of the time" (Minot 350).
A majority of the time when your parents aren't always there, it would be at least somebody to have your back when nobody else is around. This young lady had no role positive models in her life to guide her in the right direction. "When we were little, the brothers next door tied up our ankles. They held the door of the goat house and wouldn't let us out till we showed them our underpants" (Minot 351). She had nobody to talk with when these types of situations would occur.... [continues]
