Simon Christ-figure Vs. Roger Satan-figure
Lord of the flies was written by William Golding in 1954. After his participation in World War II he began teaching and writing. Lord of the flies is a simple adventure story of schoolboys on an unhabitated island after their airplane crashed. The children make a set of rules to follow, but eventually the rules are broken. The children are then divided into two different tribes. Among the two tribes there’s a Christ-figure and a Satan-figure. In Ralph’s tribe, Simon is the Christ-figure. In Jack’s tribe, Roger is considered the Satan-figure. In Ralph’s tribe, Simon is considered the Christ-figure for his actions of caring for the littluns and the rest of the kids. “Simon. He helps… He’s done as much as I have”, said Piggy (Golding 54). Simon is one of the few that help Ralph built huts while Jack’s tribe is too busy hunting. “Here the littluns who had run after him caught up with him… Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight. Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands” (Golding 56). The littluns would stay around Simon because he would help them get food they could not reach. Simon unlike the rest of the kids would make sure the littluns had food to eat. “Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy, who grabbed it” (Golding 74), Simon shared his food with Piggy because Jack wouldn’t give Piggy some food. Throughout the novel Simon was the only kid that cared about the rest of the kids and made sure they were okay. Until the day he’s murdered by the rest of the kids. “Softly, surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea” (Golding 154). After Simon’s death his body is washed away into the sea...
