Of the many boys stuck on the island in Lord of the Flies, only one was the protagonist of the story. This boy was Ralph. In the first chapter, Ralph was the one who found the conch with Piggy and called an assembly to unite the boys and see who all was on the island. In this assembly, Ralph gets voted leader most likely because he just assumes the responsibility of the leader right off the bat and the fact that he has the conch. Ralph has several main things that are important to him that he tries to get the boys to do including building shelters and keeping the fire going. Jack has very opposing viewpoints to Ralph because Jack just wants to hunt and have fun.…
Ralph represents order in this book. In the beginning, he is known as the leader. He uses the conch to bring everyone together and the conch is what made him the leader in the first place. In page 39 it says, “Then, with the martyred expression of a parent who has to keep up with the senseless ebullience of the children, he picked up the conch, turned toward the forest, and began to pick his way over the tumbled scar.” This quote tells that Ralph represents order because it says “...with the martyred expression of a parent” and…
Throughout the novel Ralph is leader for half the time because jack soon takes over. Ralph is the better leader but he fails to perform for the group all he does is talk while Jack is out their hunting for meat. “What would a beast eat?”/”Pig.”/”We eat pig.”/”Piggy”pg.83 “I gave you food, “said Jack, and my hunters will protect you from the beast. After a successful hunt Jack finally makes his move to usurp Ralph’s leadership. Jack uses the threat of the beast as a means to manipulate the others into giving him power. Jack ends up feeding the whole group with one kill. This symbolizes leadership. He boys shortly turn to Jacks side although he is a savage. After this occurs Ralph only leads a small group containing Simon and Piggy. He lost all his power because he did not give the boys what they wanted. By Ralph being the best leader he can be he cannot win them over. Ralph tries to give himself some power by saying they need to build shelters but Jack quickly starts a chant and gets his tribe rowdy. Ralph has been the leader from the beginning but was unable to keep it. He was the most effective leader by trying to get them rescued but Jack gave them what they wanted which was…
“ Ralph, the representative of civilization and democracy, lives rules, acts peacefully, and follows moral commands and values the good , who dramatically reveals the condition of civilization and democracy in Golding’s time”(Li 119). From the description of Ralph in Lord of the Flies he is automatically recognized as the main character and in like most books the main character is the hero or positive leader in the book “ He is purporting to break the rules and in the newfound freedom, but the irony is that cannot escape has accustomed regime”(Watt 178). This talks about while Ralph walks about the island he tries to be happy about not having any type of structure from an adult but he later finds out that structure is needed in order to keep everything…

Jack takes over the island leading everyone to do what he says because of the fear he instills in…
Ralph takes on the role as the adult on the island as there is none. He constantly thinks of survival, having fire, and building shelter because he is concerned about everyone's safety, “Been working for days now. And look!” (50). He’s been working on the shelters with the other boys, but then soon tire and leave him with Simon to finish the shelter. He tries to make sure a fire is always burning, constantly thinking ahead for warmth, cooking food and the possibility of rescue. Jack is a problem, he is becoming more and more barbaric, never thinking things through or supporting others, selfish and unworthy for chief, “He isn’t a proper chief” (126). Ralph would like for everyone on the island to be in one tribe so they can all help each other using all of their strengths, some are better at building shelter, others are better at hunting. Jack does not agree and resists that idea, stealing their food and making their lives even more difficult. Jack is making Ralph’s life unbearable, but Ralph perseveres to be a leader on the…
2. At first, the kids act very civilized. But through-out the book, they begin to be more barbaric. You can tell this because of these reasons. First, Jack becomes obsessed with killing the pigs, and then becomes a bloodthirsty devil.…
As we age we lose the thrill of imagination, the value of it. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding this very much happens when pre-teen boys crash on an island. The longer they stay on the island less we see of them when the first crashed on the island. The boy’s actions and beliefs turn from innocence to corrupt. In the book there are many examples of innocence to corruption these are the examples of Jack, blank, and blank.…
William Golding, in his novel lord of the flies, implies that without the constraints of social order, people would descend into anarchy and chaos. Three examples in the text that demonstrate this idea are the conch, the character of jack, and the deaths of piggy and Simon.…
The setting in The Lord of the Flies is rather ironic isn't it? I mean, usually a deserted tropical island seems rather tranquil and attractive to people today. However, the abandonment of these children presented a reflection of the current day trouble of 1940s England. Due to World War II, children were being uprooted and put into new places often having the responsibility of learning to live with new circumstances entirely on their own. I think the tropical island suggests the nature of this very real experience for children in that day: at first the attraction of the new presents itself as fun, but as time goes on the real and present dangers of the circumstances surface and attack the children.…
There are many factors that determine how people conduct themselves in their daily lives. From the day people are born, they are governed by a set of laws that influence the way they live. Children are taught how to behave by parents or guardians, and adults are taught by the structures of society that keep people civilized with laws and order. In “Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding, the author shows that without the influence of civilized society and law, people can revert back to an undeveloped existence. In chapter eight of “Lord of the Flies,” the hunters kill a pig. They cut the head off of the pig and attach it to a sharpened stake in the jungle. In the novel, the pig’s head has symbolic importance because it represents evil, fear, and violence.…

The bloated fat and sensuous enjoyment, and hiding the sunshine from the damp and hot weather showed that the pigs were in a calm, peaceful rest. Also as a tranquil overture for the following brutal, savage extermination. The word “sensuously” also has a meaning of “ gratifying sexually “, it is a foreshadow for the coming sexual connotations.…
