1.1 Project Context
Logistics is one of the most important functions in business today. No marketing, manufacturing and project execution can succeed without proper logistics support. Logistics is the management of the flow of goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet the requirements of consumers. Logistics involves the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material-handling, and packaging, and occasionally security.
One of the problems that a company encounters involves faults in the proper handling of materials and scheduling of jobs that needs to be done to properly execute a project. Without proper management of logistics in a company, projects will fail, customers will be unsatisfied and the business will eventually go bankrupt. Logistics management is a relatively new industry in the Philippine business scene. Local businesses still rely on the manual (and therefore slower) strategy on handling logistics.
Multinational companies hire software developers to create logistics management software especially for their business model. This is a good move on the company since with the advent of IT-based technologies, customers became more in demand of receiving their goods at the right time, right address, in perfect condition... at the lowest rate.
The point of all these policies and metrics is to satisfy the end user. This usually means the customer. If you can deliver a product on a timely and orderly manner, then that means your support supply chain is working perfectly. It will also give an added bonus to the prestige of your company since your customers are satisfied with the deliveries. These ending scenarios are also the objectives of many non-business related organizations, like the military. Logistics measures can really help ensure the success and productivity of your organization as a whole.
1.2 Purpose and Description
Hizon Laboratory Inc. (HLI) first opened its doors, making it the very first pharmaceutical manufacturing company in the Philippines. Founded by Don Primo K. Hizon, this venerable institution was grounded even then in the font of knowledge and education for Mr. Hizon was a professor of chemistry at his alma mater who owned a drugstore, devoted much of his time and energies to research and often experimented with pharmaceutical preparations.
The passage of years wrought many changes on HLI – it survived two world wars, the Japanese Occupation during the Second World War, destruction of its premises by fire and the permutations of ownership. Throughout the company never ceased to develop and introduce new medical products to its consumers.
As its founder had envisioned more than 100 years ago, HLI continues to successfully serve the health needs of the Filipino people.
The researchers believe that logistics management software will be a benefit to the company. With an LMS, the company would easily manage the materials stored in their warehouses; seeing which materials are in critical level, filling out an order form to their suppliers. Monitoring of the movement of materials from supplier to warehouse or warehouse to warehouse (if the need arises) would also be easier as it would be done online.
