Critically analyse the role of local government within the context of public sector governance in South Africa
Since the fall of the old regime, structures have been put in place to combat those cracks that have been showing in the administration side of our country. Some of these structures have taken the form of local government. The primary responsibility of local governments in South Africa today is to provide access to crucial public services. Local government plays an important role in society with regards to democracy as it promotes important values that nurture democracy. Not only does these values affect democracy but also affects people as individuals and through these individuals comes our local government in society. Through local government it can be seen as a voice for the people as this is another way of how people can voice their opinions as most of the time local government is considered to be the go between or middle man for society and provincial government. To analyze the role of local government I will be using the history of local government, local government in present day South Africa, local government system, governance and functions and approaches of local government as evidence.
