Bipolar Disorder is a serious and fairly common mental illness that affects approximately three million people in the United States. Characterized by cycles of extreme elation or mania and severe depression, bipolar disorder is a complex and difficult to understand mental health disorder. History of Bipolar may be one of the oldest recognized mental illnesses. Aretaeus of Cappadocia recognized the separate symptoms of Mania and Depression. Although it affects the mental processes and emotions, has a far-reaching effect. Bipolar Disorder is mainly known for the swings between high and low mood, as well as the fluctuating energy levels. High moods cause patients to indulge in more risky behavior and act more impulsively or recklessly, whereas low moods cause lethargy and lack of motivation. Since the brain and body are linked, the phases of Bipolar Disorder will have a negative effect on the other systems of the body. The specialist that I would wish to visit and their areas of expertise, would be Wendy E Doran, M.D., is a Board Certified, Harvard trained, licensed child, adolescent and adult psychiatrist and Psych Pharmacologist.
