November 23, 2012 Angela Carter’s rendition of the Little Red Riding Hood is called The Company of Wolves. This version begins by creating the image of a dangerous, cunning, and ferocious creature – the wolf. Carter tells tales of wolves and their evil and deceiving ways. She later transitions into her version of Little Red Riding Hood and creates the sense of a vulnerable and innocent girl. However, by the end of the story, this girl shows a not-so-innocent side. Throughout The Company of Wolves, a sense of feministic ideas is portrayed as Carter expresses a view of women being dominant over men. Within the short tales that begin this story, wolves are portrayed as dangerous and evil creatures. One of those stories talks about wolves and men interchanging forms. As the story progresses, a woman’s husband becomes a wolf and runs away. Instead of grieving for a long period of time, she simply “dried her eyes and found herself another husband.” Another story talks about a wolf that attacked a young girl, yet she was rescued by those who heard her screams. Both of these instances show women overcoming the wolves, who are symbols for men. This creates a sense of dominance and supports feministic ways. As the story of Little Red Riding Hood begins, Carter states that although there are wolves within the forest, the young girl believes that “the wild beasts cannot harm her.” This supports feminist ideas in two ways. It creates a sense that she is not fearful of the wolves. As Carter refers to the wolves as wild beasts, it also creates a negative image for men because they are symbolized as wolves. The girl, however, is portrayed as an innocent and positive figure. Together, these make the girl seem equal, if not dominant over men. When the girl meets the man in the forest, she seems to fall for his charm and good looks because she had “never seen such a fine fellow.” Her sense of safety grows as she begins to talk to and trust

These things are all very important to the story of Sam and Grace in Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater.     Red is a daring, adventurous, intelligent, assertive and ambitious young girl who delivers cookies and sweets all on her own throughout the forest. Overall, she is strong, independent and even knows karate and basic self-defence which gives her the ability to defend herself against the wolf that approaches her in the forest. Just like Red, who isn’t like other stereotypical young girls, Granny isn’t like your typical grandmother. She has a tattoo on her neck and lives her life on the edge. Not only does she bake the best cakes in the forest but she also does extreme sports and is independent. Unlike the original story, the Woodcutter isn’t the saviour of this story. Credit for saving little Red actually goes to Granny who saved her from the goodie recipe stealing bunny. The woodcutter just happened to be at the scene when the wolf attacks Granny. This links back into today’s context as this generation is all about the empowerment of women. In society today, women are proving that they aren’t just useful for cooking and cleaning but they can save themselves and can be just as strong as any man.     Different versions of Little Red Riding Hood have been retold throughout written history. Each retelling was written in a culture of its own, which holds its own philosophies on each of the continuing main ideas in each version. One integral philosophy is their principles of femininity. Because so much time had past from the original work to the time of the newer retelling, the newer version had to be rewritten to tell a different tale, distinguishing the principles of femininity that the two cultures contrasted.     While walking to grandmas, Little Red encounters a male figure, the wolf, who acts friendly to deceive her, and tells her that there “are beautiful flowers all about” and then, Little Red “left the path and ran off into the woods looking for flowers” (Grimm 14).     The text The Company of Wolves is a very risqué take on the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood. The text is very sexually suggestive in its use of language and descriptions of the main character. It is also very traditional and conservative in its presentation of gender stereotypes and roles. The main characters virginity is described as ‘the invisible pentacle of her own virginity. She is an unbroken egg, she is a sealed vessel; she has inside her a magic space the entrance to which is shut tight with a plug of membrane… she does not know how to shiver” this description is very sexually suggestive and its elaborate descriptions are very creepy and over the top. This is remarkably different to the original story which doesn't make mention of any sexual themes.     “The wolf is carnivore incarnate and he’s as cunning as he is ferocious; once he’s had a taste of flesh then nothing else will do” quotes Angela Carter, in her reimagining of the classic fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” in her short story “The Company of Wolves.” The original tale by Charles Perrault served as a thinly veiled cautionary tale for young women to suppress their sexuality which comes in the form of the wolf, and submit to the servile situations, or else they come to a bad end. In Carter’s version though, she turns the tale on its head and does the opposite; Angela Carter’s story states that sexuality can neither be stigmatized nor evaded, as it is biological. She talks of how the women were taught to fear their sexuality, to run away from it as if the devil himself was pursuing behind. “If you spy a naked man among the pines, you must run as if the Devil were after you.” The image of a naked man (signifying sexual desire) is transposed on that of a raving beast who is to be eluded or escaped from. The reference to the Devil too perhaps isn’t entirely unplanned. What better way to impose iron-clad chastity on women if not reminding them of the Devil in tandem with sexual desire, the ultimate forbidden fruit? However, as Carter puts it, “the wolves have ways of arriving at your own hearthside. We try and we try but sometimes we cannot keep them out” and this is perhaps the best example of Carter’s allusion to the attempt at repressing human sexuality. Like the wolves, she states, the desire ends up dogging at your heels, no matter how much a person might attempt to keep it out. This blatant attempt on the author’s part is an attempt at restructuring the roles of the women so that they are more than just set in their gender roles which teaches them sexuality is to be reviled or feared; “sheltered” in one form or another for centuries, out of which they are beginning to emerge.
