Litter: Recycling and Fishing Nets
Litter and rubbish are great problems, aren’t they?
Litter is garbage like food, paper and cans on the ground or in the street. Where many people live together, litter is a problem. People don’t always put their garbage in the garbage can. It’s easier to drop a paper than to find a garbage can for it. But litter is ugly. It makes the city look dirty, and it spoils the view. Litter makes the city look unattractive and can cause further problems like attracting pests. Food litter attracts pests such as mice and rats. The more food pests have, the more they will breed.
The wind blows papers far away. Often they are difficult to catch. When they blow against a fence, they stay there. This fence is a wall of garbage. Sweetie papers blowing around our cities are one thing, but the worst type of trash dumped on our streets has got to be food packaging and cigarette butts.
Smoking related rubbish is now the biggest litter problem, with cigarette litter reported to be found on 78% of our streets. Research shows that smokers usually drop their cigarette ends on the floor because they believe that they have nowhere else to put them. If you are a smoker please put out your cigarette ends and put them in the bin.
Animals may get trapped or poisoned with litter in their habitats. Cigarette butts and filters are a threat to wildlife and have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds and whales, who have mistaken them for food. Also animals can get trapped in the rubbish and be in serious discomfort. For example, the plastic used to hold beverage cans, can get wrapped around animals' necks and cause them to suffocate as they grow. Other instances where animals could be harmed by litter include broken glass lacerating the paws of dogs, cats, and other small mammals, fishing nets caught on the necks of seals and turtles, etc.
The government should clamp down on rubbish droppers-people do not think twice about dropping it-in fact I think nowadays they just drop it without realizing it because it is the norm. The police never pull anyone up about it because they are usually driving instead of walking and if they do see anything it’s too much trouble-they are probably on the way to have their lunch.
Some people want to control litter. They never throw litter themselves; they work together in groups to clean up the city. In most places litter is against the law. The law punishes people who throw garbage on the streets. They usually pay a fine, and occasionally they go to jail.
Sometimes it's seems to me we are a special virus on our planet and it's not because I've seen a lot of films. I live in the center but I can't look out of the window because of the rubbish which is everywhere. We keep doing harm, we just can't imagine our life without doing it, it's our people's nature and to stop it we should change our thinking.

There’s nothing like walking through the park in the summertime, and seeing all the beautiful garbage scattered in the grass. It’s even better when you see the little bunnies chewing on that plastic wrapper someone left on the ground. Also, it’s just wonderful when you’re driving and you see someone throwing a cigarette butt out their window. Don’t you think so?…

Litter, litter, everywhere and nary a piece gets recycled. Why? It seems pretty simple to put litter back into the recycling loop and that's just what the Nicodemus Wilderness Project does after a cleanup. The majority of the litter that we collect during our trail cleanups is recyclable. There are lots of glass bottles, paper products, plastics, and aluminum cans littering our wild lands and waters. Removing this litter from the shoreline, mountains, and other wilderness areas prevents wildlife injury and restores the natural beauty of our environment. Recycling this litter elevates the effort an extra step by ensuring this trash stays out of the landfill. At the Nicodemus Wilderness Project, we've even reused some of this litter…

The human littering causes major impacts that are both positive and negative; it is a positive to the environment as it has created weeds such as the pennywort and Wandering Jew which formed habitats for native and migratory animals, as well as protecting them from predation as their weeds are in abundance making it hard for predators to find their prey. Although, human litter can cause weeds that impact the environment negatively such as the Morning Glory and Balloon Vines. These are parasitic weeds as they restrict native plants from sunlight and nutrients to survive and provide food the animals in the ecosystems . Additionally, the litter from humans, urban runoff and flooding; transports foreign chemicals from batteries, electronic products, cleaning products and eroded products. This will change its acidity, turbidity levels and temperature which causes an unnatural environment for the native animals and plants. (refer to figure 2.1). Furthermore, this can also contribute to the formation of patches of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) as high content of phosphates are emitted from stormwater drainage systems and human domestic pet faeces that they do not clean up. The blue-green algae will affect the aquatic ecosystems as it will use large amounts of carbon dioxide, and increase turbidity…

This is true because if the fish eat the litter mistaking it for their food then they will have chemicals or the litter still in their digestive system or stomach. After that, if somebody kills the fish and then eat it, then the “eaters” will have the litter or chemicals and then the consumer(s) may die. Another reason is that if the animals eat the marine debris, then they may die from the chemicals, they may be strangled, or if they survive, they may be disfigured. Also, Litter-Bot 1.0 helps the habitat by getting the litter that could harm, destroy, or both. Litter-Bot 1.0 gets the marine debris from the habitat, then the animals can be safe and healthy and if people eat these safe and healthy fish then the people are also happy, safe, and healthy. Therefore, Litter-Bot 1.0 improves the quality of life for animals, habitats, and…
