Literature Review
Introduction
In this research proposal one will be analysing and researching how the internet has impacted high street travel agents and if there will be a need for them in the future. One will be also completing a comprehensive and well-structured literature review which is drawn from a variety of different sources. The proposal will go on to discuss, recommend and justify the research question. One’s aim is to analyse how the internet has affected travel agents. One has chosen the topic because one thought that it would be an interesting topic to do because there is lots of information surrounding this topic and also because it is a current issue and one would like to analyze and research this topic to discover how it’s actually affected travel agents and & if it will one day eliminate travel agents as a whole and overall one just thinks it will be a very interesting topic to discuss & to research. One’s objectives are to find out why its affected travel agents, to find out if people prefer the use of the internet to going into an actual travel agent, to find out if one day the internet will actually eliminate the use of travel agents or if there is going to be a mixture of the two. Due to the advances in technology it means that now anyone can book their holidays from the comfort of their own home, but is this necessarily a good thing? Should people continue to book online or should they stick to the good old fashioned way and do it via travel agencies? One shall be analyzing this also in the literature review. There are many different arguments as to if it will continue to grow if there will be a mixture & there has been a lot of research towards this particular topic.

The main function of travel agents is to make the life of holidaymakers easier, relaxing and convenient. They can do this by providing outstanding customer service that would exceed the expectations of the customers. They must be able to match needs of the clients to the products and services that are on offer. It is their responsibility to provide information about the activities and events at the chosen destination of the holidaymakers and offer them advance booking services. Another responsibility of travel agents is to give important pieces of advice to the clients before the holiday such as: weather, vaccination and offer passport and visa services.…

This company remained unique on its market because it keeps its traditional way of selling services. It is one of the few bodies that do not sell via internet. A holiday can be booked with Trailfinders only by phone or in a shop street. They think that for providing the perfect touristic products, a meeting face to face with a travel agent is necessary. In their opinion, when a holiday is booked on the internet cannot cover all the client’s needs because it is an impersonal action. A customer it can’t be sure if the chosen holiday from the…

Many customers of both Expedia and Priceline already had a combined travel agency that would normally have taken care of their travel plans. When the Internet boom exploded, companies such as Microsoft jumped on the idea of having a travel agency online. The Wall Street Journal Online Edition confirms this need for technology by reporting on the company’s participation in J.P. Morgan’s annual telecom conference. The Wall Street Journal agrees, “Expedia, Inc. is the largest online travel company in the world, with an extensive brand portfolio that includes some of the world's leading online travel brands ("Expedia, inc. to," 2013).” This would enable a new customer base that would promote Internet sales, and an easier way of life for frequent travelers. Selling points for both of these companies is extremely important, as the transition from a brick and mortar company to a web based company was a hard shift.…

    Future of Travel Agencies

Whether travel agencies and tour operators still have a role in the worlds future is a very controversial subject, some believing they do, and some believing they don’t. Although I tend to book my holiday adventures online, I believe in Mr Talwer’s statement, that being they do still have a future. I however don’t currently use tour operators because I am familiar with the destination I visit as I have been there many times before, therefore it is much easier to book the flights and accommodation direct and online. This is because I believe if you are intending to book a short haul flight it would be much easier to book online, however long haul destinations there is more money involved as well as needing more information about the destination in which a face to face conversation with a tour operator would be able to answer, rather than searching online.…

In recent years, there has been significant development in the technology world, where consumers have the ability to access the continually evolving Internet through different mediums and at a faster rate. Nearly all computers now have the capability to connect to the Internet, and henceforth, producers of tourism products are utilising the Internet as an alternative distribution channel to sell their products, instead of using a tour operator. This allows consumers to book directly with their producer, whether it is cheap flights with EasyJet, or a hotel in Bangkok. This saves both consumers and producers money as they cut out the cost of an intermediary.…

The number of travel agents has declined sharply during the last decade. According to an article of RockCheetah (www.rockcheetah.com, viewed on 12 May 2013) 30 per cent of all travel agents have had to close down since 2000. The reason of the major decline seem clear. The internet is infinitely popular and beholds many advantages over the rather old fashioned travel agents. The online booking of holidays is preferred by many people because of several reasons. The best rates are just few clicks away while various organisations and tour operators are compared simultaneously. Moreover, no additional charges have to be paid to a travel agent. Complementary, cars and traffic jams are avoided because it is no longer necessary to get in the car. All can be arranged from the comfort of a own home. Questioned is whether travel agencies still have any purpose in today's society and if they will last for another decade.…
