What is Literacy?
Teachers won’t be able to convey their thoughts and students wouldn’t be able to learn if literacy did not exist. Literacy is the skill of being able to read, write, listen and speak when it comes to written language (Brace, et al, 2011). Literacy begins at home when parents read to their children or teach them to speak so they can voice what they want (Davison, 2007). It is when the children is sent to school that their literacy skills are enhanced by careful lesson planning, structured activities and kind words of encouragement by their teacher. Learning literacy begins at a young age even though speaking comes naturally at a young if the child was not taught correctly pronunciation, writing or reading it will be harder to correct later on in life in any subject (BBC, 2010).
Parents rely on teachers to assess a child’s daily progress and to teach them the necessities by using teaching techniques like scaffolding or modelled speaking and listening (Eggen& Kauchak, 2010). Australia is a very multicultural nation in the world (ABC, 2010); this means most households English is a second language. Illiteracy can result in people not being able to integrate into society. The Australian government launched ESL classes(English Second Language) to solve the issue of illiteracy in Australia, ESL teaching guidelines are designed by the government to ensure that all students have equal opportunities in the future since English is the main language in this society (Department of Edu, 2004).
The Australian government stresses on the importance of literacy due to its influence on the quality of life. Illiteracy can lead to poverty, crime and antisocial behaviours (Clark & Dugdale, 2008). These factors alone are enough to give the government reason to launch literacy campaigns like National Literacy and Numeracy week to stress the importance to of just how influential literacy is.
